Adjusting the Low Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The low height of an office chair can be adjusted through methods such as using a control lever, replacing the gas lift, or adjusting the chair feet. Special cases require targeted solutions.

Regular Adjustment Methods

  1. Using the Control Lever
Most office chairs are equipped with a height-adjustment lever (usually a black or silver metal lever) located beneath the seat or on the side. To adjust, lift or press the lever while gently pressing or lifting the seat with your body to assist in height adjustment. Some levers have a locking function; after adjustment, reset the lever to fix the height. This method is suitable for most manually adjustable office chairs and is simple to operate without requiring additional tools.

  2. Replacing the Gas Lift
If the control lever fails or the height adjustment range is insufficient, consider replacing the gas lift. Note the following points:

  • Parameter Matching: When purchasing, ensure that the load-bearing capacity, diameter, and other parameters of the gas lift match those of the original chair to avoid safety hazards due to mismatch.
  • Operating Procedures: Before replacement, release the seat pressure (e.g., by inverting the chair or gently pressing the seat) to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury. Avoid using violent tools during disassembly to prevent abnormal pressure release inside the gas lift, which could cause an explosion.
  • Installation Testing: After installation, test the stability of the seat to ensure there is no wobbling or collapse.
  1. Adjusting the Chair Feet
For older chairs without adjustment functions, place wooden boards, rubber pads, etc., under the chair feet (thickness recommended not to exceed 5cm) to indirectly adjust the seat height by increasing the height of the chair feet. Note the following:
  • Stability: The pads should be flat and firmly fixed to prevent the chair from tipping over.
  • Material Selection: Prioritize non-slip, wear-resistant materials, such as rubber pads, to enhance safety during use.

Adjustment Precautions

  1. Safety First
  • Wear protective gloves when disassembling or assembling the gas lift to avoid cuts from metal parts.
  • After adjustment, test the stability of the seat multiple times to ensure there is no abnormal wobbling or sinking.
  1. Ergonomic Fit
The ideal seat height should allow your feet to rest flat on the ground with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle; your waist should be in contact with the seat backrest without hanging in the air; and there should be no pressure on your legs. If the adjustment still does not meet ergonomic standards, further adjustment or chair replacement is necessary.

Handling Special Cases

  1. Electric Office Chairs
  • Press the electric adjustment button (usually marked with up and down arrows) on the side of the seat to automatically adjust the height.
  • If the button fails, check the power connection or contact after-sales service for repair. Do not disassemble the circuit by yourself.
  1. Older Fixed-Height Chairs
  • Contact a professional furniture repair shop to install an adjustment device (such as a gas lift or mechanical lifting mechanism).
  • If the repair cost is too high, it is recommended to directly replace the chair with a new one that meets ergonomic standards.
