Looseness and Wobbling of Office Chairs

Admin October 19, 2026

Looseness and wobbling of office chairs can be resolved by checking connecting components, inspecting the gas lift, examining the chair legs, and performing regular maintenance. Wooden chairs require targeted solutions.

1. Check and Tighten Connecting Components

The stability of an office chair depends on the secure connection of its components. Focus on inspecting the following areas:

  • Base and Chair Leg Connection: Loose screws are a common cause. Tighten them with the appropriate tools (e.g., screwdriver or wrench). If the screws are stripped, replace them with parts of the same specification.
  • Five-Star Base and Connecting Screws: As the foundational support structure of the chair, if the connecting screws are loose or the bottom plastic sleeves are worn, tighten the screws or replace the worn parts.
  • Seat and Gas Lift Connection: Check if the fixing screws or clips are loose. Tighten them promptly to prevent gaps between the seat and the gas lift.
  • Armrest and Backrest Connection: Prolonged use may cause screws to loosen or plastic parts to age. Tighten the screws or replace the aged parts, paying special attention to the integrity of the plastic clips.
  • Backrest Support Structure: Inspect the tightness of the connecting rod between the backrest and the seat, or check if the elastic components (e.g., springs) are damaged. Adjust the angle of the connecting rod or replace the elastic components if necessary.

2. Inspect the Gas Lift

Aging or failure of the internal seals in the gas lift can lead to stuck lifting, leakage, or instability of the chair. Check if the gas lift operates smoothly. If it sinks, makes unusual noises, or cannot hold a fixed height, it indicates damage to the internal seals, and the gas lift should be replaced with one that meets safety standards.

3. Check the Chair Legs

Deformation or breakage of the chair legs directly affects stability. Minor deformations can be corrected with tools (e.g., gently tapping with a hammer to reset). If the legs are broken or severely deformed, replace them with new ones.

4. Regular Maintenance Recommendations

  • Regular Inspections: It is recommended to conduct a comprehensive inspection at least once a month to check the tightness of screws, the condition of the gas lift, and the wear of the bottom leg protectors. Promptly address any loose or damaged parts.
  • Environmental Management: Avoid keeping the chair in a humid environment for extended periods (which can cause metal parts to rust) or on uneven ground (which increases localized stress), to reduce the risk of wobbling.

5. Special Handling for Wooden Chairs

If the chair is wooden, wobbling may be caused by uneven leg lengths, joint wear, or worn wood glue:

  • Adjust Leg Lengths: Install furniture nails or pads at the bottom of the shorter legs to ensure all four legs contact the ground evenly.
  • Refasten Joints: Remove the old glue, sand the seams, apply new wood glue, and secure them with clamps until the glue is completely dry.
