Office Chair Looseness

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair looseness may involve issues such as a loose backrest or sagging mesh fabric, which require troubleshooting and repair based on the specific situation.

Loose Backrest

  • Causes: Loose adjustment rod screws, fatigued backrest springs, or an aged gas lift cylinder. If the backrest wobbles significantly when leaning back and makes abnormal noises, it is likely due to loose adjustment rod screws. If the backrest lacks rebound force, the springs or gas lift cylinder may be aged. You can use a mobile phone flashlight to check for gaps at the connection point below the backrest.
  • Repair Solutions:
    • Loose Adjustment Rod Screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection point counterclockwise. After exposing the metal fixing frame, use a wrench to tighten the 6 - 8 fixing screws one by one. You can operate them symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force distribution.
    • Spring Detachment: Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the backrest. Use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, you can purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3 - 5mm online. Be sure to measure the length of the original spring before buying.
    • Excessive Gas Lift Cylinder Clearance: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat. Locate the gas lift cylinder adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part) and rotate it counterclockwise to increase the support force. Test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ during adjustment.
  • Emergency Reinforcement Tips: If you don't have professional tools, you can cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide tape and wrap it around the seam between the backrest and the base to increase friction. Alternatively, you can use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift cylinder to limit the swing amplitude, which can maintain stability for 3 - 7 days of use.

Sagging Mesh Fabric

  • Causes:
    • Poor Material Quality: Low-end chairs use ordinary mesh fabric made from recycled chemical fibers. The fibers have poor toughness and tensile strength, and the weaving density is low, resulting in weak anti-tensile ability. Long-term pressure from the human body can easily cause the fabric to stretch and deform.
    • Frame Structure Issues: The seat frame is made of thin material and has an insufficient arc. Inexpensive models have thin and fragile frames for the backrest and seat, which are prone to slight deformation under pressure. If the frame arc does not have a pre-tensioning design for tension, the mesh fabric will not be tight when installed.
    • Poor Assembly Process: Small workshops simply fix the mesh fabric with snap fasteners without tightening it or performing tension setting. The chair may look fine when it leaves the factory, but the mesh fabric will gradually sag after a few months of use.
    • Lack of Sponge Auxiliary Layer: Low-priced models directly omit the cushioning layer, so all the weight is placed on the mesh fabric. Long-term single-point pressure can easily cause local sagging and looseness.
    • Unreasonable Seat Size: If the seat is too wide and has a large span, the suspended area of the mesh fabric is large, and the tensile force increases exponentially. It is more likely to stretch and deform compared to conventional sizes.
