How to Lock an Office Chair in Place

Admin October 16, 2026

To lock an office chair in place, you can use the following methods depending on the type of chair:

Lever-Adjusted System Chair

Locate the adjustment lever beneath the seat (usually on the right side). If the control lever is accidentally pushed in and gets stuck during the backrest recline process, first pull the control lever out completely again. At this point, the backrest will usually automatically return to its original position due to the built-in spring. If it does not reset automatically, assist by pushing the chair back forward with your hand. Once the backrest is fully upright, push the control lever into the correct locking pin hole to achieve locking.

Gas Cylinder-Adjusted Chair

Find the adjustment handle beneath the chair. Pull the handle upward (for some models, press the side button), while leaning your body forward. The backrest will return to the upright position following the force of your body. Release the handle to re-fix the angle, keeping the chair stationary.

Knob-Adjusted Chair

These chairs typically have a knob on the side or rear of the seat for adjusting the recline resistance or locking the angle. Rotating the knob counterclockwise usually unlocks or reduces the recline resistance. At this point, lean your body forward, and the backrest can be easily reset. Then, rotate the knob clockwise to the appropriate position to lock the backrest angle.

General Operating Steps

First, locate the adjustment lever. The position of the adjustment lever varies for different styles of office chairs, usually on the side or front beneath the chair, so look carefully. Next, lean against the backrest and gently push back until you reach the desired recline angle. Then, find the locking mechanism, which may be the second-stage function of the adjustment lever. Operate the adjustment lever or knob to fix the backrest and prevent it from moving further. You can also try pushing in the handle specifically for adjusting the backrest beneath the chair to see if it locks the backrest.

If the above operations do not resolve the issue of the chair not locking, refer to the product manual and follow its instructions. Alternatively, consult customer service for professional assistance. Additionally, if the chair is in a state where it can rock slightly back and forth, the rocking function lock may have been pulled open. Locate the rocking function adjustment lever or lock beneath the chair (usually also on the side) and push it back to lock the chair, stopping the rocking and fixing the angle.
