Office Chair Load-Bearing

Admin October 14, 2026

The load-bearing specifications for office chairs mainly refer to the BIFMA certification standards, covering multi-dimensional tests such as structural strength, stability, and durability. The load-bearing requirements for different components and test scenarios are as follows:

Structural Strength Test
In the backrest static strength test, the functional load requirement is 890 Newtons (200 pounds) for 1 minute, ensuring no durability loss; the standard load is 1334 Newtons (300 pounds) for 1 minute, with no significant changes in the main structure. The load requirement for the five-star base static test is even higher, requiring it to withstand 11120 Newtons (2500 pounds) of pressure for 1 minute, and after reapplying the moving weight for another 1 minute, the oil core should not touch the test platform and the main structure should show no significant changes.

Dynamic and Impact Test
The dynamic impact test simulates actual impact scenarios: a functional load of a 102 KG (225-pound) weight is freely dropped from a height of 152 millimeters to the center of the seat, testing the highest and lowest position points once each, with no significant changes required in the main structure; the standard load is increased to 136 KG (300 pounds) under the same test conditions. The impact test further verifies durability, requiring a 57 KG (125-pound) weight to be freely dropped from a height of 25 millimeters 100,000 times with no durability loss. In the seat front leg fatigue test, each seat front corner must bear 734 Newtons (165 pounds) for 20,000 cycles, ensuring no damage.

Stability Test
The backward stability test requires the seat center to bear 79 KG (173 pounds) and apply a tipping force to the backrest until the total weight is transferred to the backward support, with the tipping force needing to be no less than 89 Newtons (20 pounds) (for Class I and II office chairs). The forward stability test verifies whether the seat can withstand an additional force of 20 Newtons (4.5 pounds) in a non-tilting state by fixing the casters and applying a force of 600 Newtons (135 pounds).

Durability Test
The rotation test requires the chair to bear 102 KG (225 pounds) at both the highest and lowest positions and complete 60,000 360-degree rotations with no durability loss. In the tilt mechanism fatigue test, the seat center bears 102 KG (225 pounds) and tilts 300,000 times at a speed of 10-30 times per minute with no damage afterward. The armrest vertical static strength test (functional load) requires applying a force of 890 Newtons at the lowest point of the armrest design to meet structural strength requirements.
