Office Chair Lifting Weakness
Admin October 11, 2026
The following steps can be taken to troubleshoot and resolve the issue of an office chair having weak lifting power:

I. Gas Spring Issues The gas spring is the core component for the lifting function of an office chair, and its malfunction is a common cause.
- Determine if the gas spring is damaged: Press down on the seat with your hand. If there is no cushioning and you hear a hissing sound, or if you hear a distinct hissing sound during lifting and lowering, it indicates that the sealing rubber ring has aged, nitrogen gas is leaking, or there is internal debris blocking. Most lifting chairs have a designed lifespan of about 5 years, and the nitrogen cylinder will gradually lose its effectiveness with use. In this case, the gas spring needs to be replaced.
- Replace the gas spring: When purchasing a replacement gas spring online, ensure that the model matches (the size and specifications should be the same as the original spring). Non-professionals attempting to replace it themselves face the risk of high-pressure gas explosions. It is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for the operation.
II. Operation and Jamming Issues
- Check the operation method: Make sure to use the lifting control lever correctly. Try to lift and lower the chair while sitting, avoiding standing or applying excessive force.
- Clean debris from the regulating valve: Remove the seat base plate and observe if there is any oil leakage at the connection between the gas spring and the regulating valve (which may indicate damaged seals). Also, check for any foreign objects such as thread ends or dust that may be jamming the regulating mechanism. If the chair sinks weakly, try rotating the base regulating button multiple times. Debris blocking the valve may cause it to malfunction.
- Tighten connecting components: Turn the chair upside down and use tools to tighten all the screws and bolts connecting the seat and the base to prevent lifting obstruction due to looseness.
- Lubricate jammed parts: If the lifting is slightly jerky but not severe, apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to the exposed part of the telescopic rod of the gas spring to alleviate jamming caused by debris or slight rust. You can also spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the push pin and press the handle multiple times until the push pin rebounds smoothly.
III. Other Issues
- Check the five-claw base: If the chair has difficulty lifting in a certain direction, check if the screws of the five-claw base are loose, especially the hexagonal bolts at the root of the rotating shaft.
- Deal with overloading: People with a heavier weight may cause the gas spring to be overloaded when using the chair. In this case, repeatedly pressing down and then quickly lifting can temporarily restore the lifting function.
- Handle low-temperature condensation: Some low-priced products use inferior hydraulic oil, which can condense in cold winter temperatures, causing the lifting to be sluggish. You can use a hairdryer to evenly heat the metal parts of the base (avoiding local overheating). Raising the temperature above 20ยฐC often provides a temporary improvement.
If none of the above methods work, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for inspection to avoid safety hazards caused by self-disassembly.
