Office Chair Lever Replacement

Admin October 16, 2026

Replacing the lever of an office chair requires preparing tools first, then removing the old lever, and finally installing the new one. The specific steps are as follows:

Tool Preparation

Prepare appropriate tools according to the type of the office chair lever. For a common office chair with a hydraulic lever, a large hammer may be needed. If the old lever is difficult to remove, lubricating oil is also required. If the lever is fixed with screws, choose a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench according to the screw type. Also, prepare needle-nose pliers for removing snap-fits, lubricant (such as WD - 40 or similar products), and lighting equipment (a mobile phone flashlight will also work).

Removing the Old Lever

  • Hydraulic lever: Raise the office chair to its highest position, and then gently tap the seat part and the wheel frame with a large hammer to try to knock out the old hydraulic lever. If it cannot be knocked out, it means the old lever may be stuck or rusted due to long-term use. In this case, lubricate it with oil and continue tapping.
  • Other types of levers: First, find the adjustment mechanism under the seat and confirm the specific position of the lever by moving the seat back and forth. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that fix the lever. During this process, you may encounter plastic snap-fits, and needle-nose pliers are needed to assist in removal. Gently shake the lever to make it come out of the adjustment mechanism. If there is rust, spray lubricant at the connection between the lever and the adjustment mechanism to facilitate removal. When taking out the old lever, remember its installation angle and connection method, and take photos if necessary for reference when installing the new lever later.

Installing the New Lever

  • Hydraulic type: Simply insert the new hydraulic lever into the corresponding position.
  • Other types of levers: Install the new lever into the adjustment mechanism at the original angle recorded before. First, tighten the screws by hand to ensure the lever is initially fixed. Then, test whether the seat can slide back and forth smoothly. If the sliding is not smooth, there may be a deviation in the installation angle or position, and adjustments are needed. After confirming that the sliding is smooth, fully tighten the screws with tools. Finally, apply a small amount of grease to the movable joints of the new lever to reduce wear and extend the service life of the lever.
