Office Chair Leg Replacement
Replacing the legs (five-star base) of an office chair requires careful step-by-step operation, with the core process including removing the old parts, selecting matching new ones, installing the new parts, and paying attention to details such as the curvature of the chair legs.

1. Removing the Old Five-Star Base
First, place the chair on its side or gently tip it onto a soft pad to avoid scratching the seat or floor. Observe the structure at the bottom of the central column:
- If there is a flat washer retaining clip: The retaining clip is usually located at the connection between the five-star base and the central column, used to secure the components. Use needle-nose pliers or a screwdriver to locate and remove the retaining clip, at which point the five-star base can be directly pulled out. Maintain even pressure during operation to avoid deforming or losing the retaining clip.
- If there is no flat washer retaining clip: The five-star base and the steel column are press-fitted through a conical structure, and you need to gently tap the connection with a rubber mallet or a hammer. When tapping, gradually apply force from the edge of the five-star base towards the center to avoid directly tapping the central column and causing damage. If the connection is too tight, you can apply a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) before tapping to help loosen it.
2. Selecting a Matching New Five-Star Base
The new part must be exactly the same model and size as the old one; otherwise, it may lead to unstable installation or tilting of the chair. Key parameters include:
- Diameter and hole spacing: The diameter of the central hole of the five-star base must match the central column, and the hole spacing for installing the casters must be the same as that of the old part.
- Material and load-bearing capacity: Choose the material (such as nylon or aluminum alloy) according to the usage scenario, and the load-bearing capacity must meet the user's weight requirements.
- Curvature of the chair legs: The curvature design affects the stability of the chair and must be the same as that of the old part to avoid shaking due to curvature differences.
It is recommended to bring the old part or take clear photos to compare with the merchant, or query the compatible model through the chair brand's official website.
3. Installing the New Five-Star Base
Align the new five-star base with the central column and gently press it to the bottom. If the connection is a conical structure, ensure it is fully press-fitted; if a retaining clip is required for fixation, check that the retaining clip is in place after installation. After installation, gently shake the chair to test its stability and confirm that there is no looseness or abnormal noise.
Precautions
- Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratching your fingers with metal parts.
- If the chair uses a gas lift, release the internal pressure before disassembly (usually by repeatedly pressing the lift button) to prevent high-pressure gas from spraying out and causing injury.
- Differences in the curvature of the chair legs may cause a shift in the center of gravity, and long-term use may accelerate wear on the chair body. Strict matching is essential.
