Office Chair Leg Replacement
Admin October 11, 2026
Replacing the legs of an office chair requires operation based on the connection method. The specific steps and precautions are as follows:

I. Confirm the Damage and Connection Method
- Invert the chair steadily and observe the broken position of the chair legs (such as metal tube fractures or damaged connection joints) and the fixing method (screws, nuts, rivets, or pressure clips).
- Special Case Handling: If the fracture involves the five-pronged base (star base), replace the five-pronged base directly; if the tilt is caused by a damaged gas lift, replace the gas lift instead of the chair legs.
II. Prepare Tools and Accessories
- Tools:
- Screwdrivers (cross/flat-head), socket wrenches, or adjustable wrenches (for screw/bolt connections);
- Rubber mallets (for clip/pressure-fit connections);
- Pliers (for rivets or special connection methods);
- Electric drills (for rivet removal only).
- Accessories:
- Purchase matching new chair legs, confirming the material (such as metal or plastic), tube diameter, length, and interface type (screw hole positions, clip styles). It is recommended to contact the original merchant or obtain them through e-commerce platforms or offline hardware stores.
III. Remove the Old Chair Legs
- Screw/Bolt Connections: Use the corresponding tool to unscrew the fixing screws or bolts, retaining the accessories for installing the new legs.
- Rivet Connections:
- If replacing with screw connections, install the new legs directly;
- If removing the old rivets, drill off the rivet heads with an electric drill and then pull out the remaining parts with pliers.
- Clip/Pressure-Fit Connections: Use a rubber mallet to evenly tap around the connection to loosen it, thenๆฐๅผ (this Chinese word means 'pry open' or 'separate') and remove it, avoiding the use of brute force that may deform the interface.
- Special Connection Methods:
- Snap-ring wheels: Use pliers to grip the snap ring and assist in pulling out the fixing iron rod;
- Threaded wheels: Rotate left to remove the wheels.
IV. Install the New Chair Legs
- Clean the Interface: Remove dust, rust, or old adhesive, check if the interface is deformed or damaged, and sand it if necessary.
- Preliminary Fixing: Align the new chair legs with the interface, insert the connecting shaft, pins, or thread the screws/bolts, temporarily not tightening them completely.
- Adjustment and Tightening:
- Ensure the chair legs are perpendicular to the seat surface and the overall structure is not skewed;
- Tighten the screws or bolts completely and test the stability.
V. Precautions
- Tool Substitutes: If professional tools are lacking, use a rubber mallet to tap the connection to loosen it or use pliers to assist in operation, but be cautious to avoid damaging the chair.
- Safety Tips: Wear gloves during operation to prevent metal cuts; if the chair is heavy, it is recommended that two people collaborate to complete the task.
