Office Chair Leg Removal

Admin October 12, 2026

The method for removing the legs of an office chair varies depending on the base structure. Here are the specific steps:

For bases with a four-leg structure, which is a common design for office chairs, start by flipping the chair over steadily so that the legs face upward, allowing you to clearly see the screw holes at the bottom of the legs. Prepare a screwdriver of the appropriate size, align it with the screws in the screw holes, and slowly turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to gradually unscrew the screws that secure the legs. When unscrewing, be sure to apply even force to avoid stripping the screws or damaging the screw holes due to excessive force. Once all the screws are removed, you can easily separate the legs from the base.

If you encounter a situation where the metal chair legs are rusted and cannot be removed, the handling is relatively more complex. First, select WD-40 penetrating oil and spray it evenly into the gaps at the screw joints. Then wait for about twenty minutes to allow the penetrating oil to fully soak into the rust layer, providing lubrication and breaking down the rust. After that, use a wrench to grip the screw head and gently tap the handle of the wrench with a hammer to loosen the rust layer through vibration, making the connection between the screw and the leg less tight. If the screw head is hexagonal, insert a hex wrench into the screw head and place a metal tube over the hex wrench to extend the lever arm. This increases the torque when turning the screw, making it easier to unscrew. If all the screws cannot be turned, you can also use a blowtorch or soldering iron to heat the screw area for a few tens of seconds, using the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to damage the rust layer. However, using fire will damage the paint on the legs, so subsequent painting will be required. If none of the above methods work, you can finally use an angle grinder to cut off the old screw heads, remove the legs, and then install a new set of screws.

For bases with a sliding design, removing the legs is relatively simple. Just try to lift the legs upward to separate them from the base, and then smoothly pull out the legs along the direction of the slide rails. During the operation, be sure to apply moderate force to avoid damaging the slide rails or the legs.
