Office Chair Leg Removal

Admin October 09, 2026

Exercise caution when removing the legs of an office chair. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Separate the Base from the Gas Cylinder
Before disassembly, separate the backrest from the seat (skip this step if they are integrated). Then, raise the gas cylinder to its highest position. While doing this, use one hand to hold the seat steady and the other to continuously press the height adjustment lever while gently shaking. Utilize the telescoping feature of the gas cylinder to gradually loosen the base from the gas rod. Be mindful of controlling the force to avoid damaging the internal components of the gas cylinder due to excessive force.

Step 2: Invert the Chair Leg and Strike
Place the entire chair leg upside down on a flat surface, with the top of the gas rod protruding upwards. Due to metal fatigue from long-term use, the connection between the gas rod and the chair leg may become tightly fitted. Use a rubber mallet to strike evenly along the circumference of the joint between the gas rod and the chair leg. If a rubber mallet is not available, place a wooden board on top of the gas rod as a buffer and use a regular hammer to lightly strike the surface of the board. Strike vertically to avoid bending the gas rod or deforming the chair leg due to lateral force.

Step 3: Assisted Loosening Techniques
If striking alone is not effective, spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant or penetrating rust remover at the connection between the gas rod and the chair leg. Wait 5-10 minutes for the liquid to penetrate the gap. Then, use an adjustable wrench to grip the base of the gas rod (avoid the height adjustment mechanism of the gas cylinder) and strike the edge of the chair leg with a rubber mallet. Use the principle of leverage to increase the success rate of disassembly. For chair legs made of plastic, strictly control the striking force to prevent cracks.

Precautions:

  1. Always wear protective gloves before operation to prevent metal burrs from scratching the skin.
  2. Do not stand on top of the chair leg during disassembly to avoid tipping over if components suddenly separate.
  3. If the gas rod and chair leg are completely rusted shut, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to use hydraulic tools for disassembly.
  4. When reassembling, apply special lubricant to the surface of the gas rod to ensure ease of future disassembly.

The entire disassembly process requires patience. Gradually loosen the connection by making slight adjustments to the striking position multiple times. For high-end office chairs, some brands may design a dedicated disassembly hole at the bottom of the gas rod. You can use the matching hex wrench for direct operation. Refer to the product manual for details.
