Office Chair Leg Materials

Admin October 09, 2026

Common materials for office chair legs include nylon, steel, and aluminum alloy, each with its own characteristics and suitable scenarios.

Nylon Chair Legs:
Their core advantages lie in being abrasion-resistant, corrosion-resistant, high-strength, and lightweight. They are formed in one piece through injection molding without the need for welding, weighing only 0.8 - 1.5 kg. This characteristic results in low inertia during movement, non-conductivity, and high safety, making them especially suitable for humid or chemically corrosive environments. Their low cost makes them the preferred choice for large-scale matching, commonly found in high-end ergonomic chairs and low-end office chairs. However, they may become brittle under long-term heavy pressure or in low-temperature environments (high-quality nylon can be reinforced with glass fibers to mitigate this issue), and their surfaces are prone to scratches, so sharp objects should be avoided.

Steel Chair Legs:
Renowned for their high strength and strong load-bearing capacity, they are made through steel pipe bending and welding or steel plate stamping and welding processes, with surface treatments such as spraying or electroplating (e.g., chromium). They weigh about 2 - 3 kg, and although they are cumbersome to move, their structure is stable and not prone to breakage, making them suitable for scenarios requiring long-term load-bearing. However, if the welding points are not properly treated, they are prone to rusting. Electroplated models are prone to leaving fingerprints, and their manufacturing cost is higher than that of nylon. Their corrosion resistance depends on the surface treatment process; if the spray coating is damaged, rusting may accelerate, requiring regular inspection and maintenance.

Aluminum Alloy Chair Legs:
They offer the best overall performance, being corrosion-resistant, low-density, high-strength, and environmentally friendly and recyclable. They are formed through die-casting and then undergo polishing, wire drawing, or spraying treatments, weighing about 1.5 - 2.5 kg. Their non-rusting and anti-aging characteristics make them the preferred choice for mid-to-high-end office chairs, often presenting a metallic original color or a glossy finish with a prominent texture. However, their cost is relatively high (about 2 - 4 times that of nylon), and the die-casting process may have defects such as air holes and shrinkage cavities, so it is necessary to choose a reputable manufacturer to ensure strength. In addition, aluminum alloy chair legs have high requirements for design precision, and machining errors may affect overall stability.

Selection Advice:
If you prioritize portability and cost, nylon chair legs are a cost-effective choice; if you need high-strength load-bearing and don't mind the weight, steel chair legs are more reliable; if you focus on durability, environmental friendliness, and appearance texture, although aluminum alloy chair legs are more expensive, they offer significant long-term advantages. Users can make a comprehensive decision based on the usage scenario, budget, and performance requirements.
