Office Chair Leg is Loose

Admin October 14, 2026

If the leg of an office chair is loose, targeted solutions can be adopted based on different causes of looseness, as follows:

If the looseness of the chair leg is due to an insecure connection, such as loose screws between the chair leg and the seat frame, you need to select a screwdriver of the corresponding size. Use a Phillips screwdriver for Phillips screws and a flat-head screwdriver for flat-head screws, and then tighten the screws clockwise. If the screws are stripped and cannot be tightened, you can wrap 1 - 2 turns of Teflon tape around the screw rod, or add a small washer, and then drip a small amount of 502 glue into the screw hole (be careful not to drip it onto the surface of the chair body). After increasing the friction, screw it in to make the connection more secure.

If the chair leg has no bolt structure, using a wrench is not applicable because wrenches are mainly used for tightening bolts and nuts; saws are used for cutting materials and cannot solve the looseness problem. In this case, you can use a hammer to drive a nail into the loose part to reinforce the connection. This method is more suitable for repairing chair legs that have no bolt structure and are loose.

If one of the wheel feet at the bottom of the chair that can rotate vertically and horizontally is bent or deformed, causing the chair to tilt and become loose, first place the chair upright and make sure each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. Then, turn the chair upside down and check each wheel foot for signs of damage. If a damaged wheel is found, you need to purchase a new set of matching wheels for a complete replacement. When removing the old casters, hold the wheel of the caster with one hand and the bottom of the chair with the other hand and pull hard. If it cannot be pulled out, use a flat-head screwdriver to assist. Apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD - 40) to each socket on the chair base, and use a rubber mallet to tap each caster into its socket on the chair. Finally, turn the chair upside down to test whether the new wheels are installed firmly and working properly.

If one of the four foot pads is crooked or has fallen off, causing the entire chair to be uneven and wobble, you can replace it with an anti-slip foot pad of the same size. After placing the chair flat, tighten the fixing screws that come with the foot pad, or firmly clamp the press-type foot pad to the bottom of the chair leg to ensure that all four foot pads are firmly in contact with the ground, so that the chair can remain stable.
