Office Chair Leg Heightening

Admin October 22, 2026

There are multiple ways to heighten the legs of an office chair, as detailed below:

  1. Using heightening pads/footrests
This is the most common and convenient method. Purchase dedicated furniture heightening pads or footrests and simply slip them over or stick them to the bottom of the existing chair legs. These products are typically made of non-slip, wear-resistant rubber, plastic, or metal materials, with suction cups or non-slip textures on the bottom to effectively raise the chair's height and maintain stability. Common heightening pads can raise the chair by 2 to 5 centimeters, with some products even achieving a height increase of 8 to 12 centimeters. Installation is mostly tool-free and suitable for most wooden chairs and metal-framed chairs.

  2. Adjusting the chair's original mechanism
Some office chairs come with built-in height adjustment features. Carefully inspect the underside or sides of the chair for manual knobs, levers, pull rods, or electric adjustment switches. Follow the product instructions to easily adjust the chair to the desired height without the need for additional accessories.

  3. Addressing malfunctioning height adjustment in swivel chairs
If a swivel office chair fails to adjust in height, the issue may lie with the gas lift cylinder. First, try pressing down on the seat. If there is no cushioning or you hear a hissing sound, it is likely that the internal seal of the gas lift cylinder is worn, nitrogen has leaked, or debris is blocking it. In this case, the gas lift cylinder needs to be replaced. It is recommended to choose accessories with SGS certification to ensure safety. Additionally, check if the base adjustment valve is stuck with foreign objects and confirm that all screws, bolts, and the locking mechanism at the bottom are secure. For minor height adjustment stuttering, apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to theไผธ็ผฉ (telescoping) part of the gas lift cylinder for relief.

  4. DIY chair leg heightening
Prepare scissors, glue (or double-sided tape), and fabric or old clothes. Cut the fabric into the appropriate size and shape with scissors, then stick it onto the chair legs. Ensure it is flat and free of gaps when sticking so that it is stable when sitting. Choose thicker fabric for a more pronounced heightening effect and greater durability.

  5. Using objects for heightening
Cut off the top and bottom of an empty Maidong bottle and place it under the chair legs. This is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective, and the height can be adjusted according to your needs.

  6. Adding heightening legs
Specialized chair heightening legs are available on the market, typically made of metal or plastic and very sturdy. Simply install them at the bottom of the chair. Ensure they are firmly and stably installed, and after installation, sit on the chair a few times to check for stability.

  7. Replacing with longer chair legs or using connectors for extension
If the chair legs are detachable, purchase or customize longer legs for replacement, ensuring load-bearing capacity and stability. Alternatively, use dedicated connectors to vertically connect multiple chair legs, suitable for chairs originally designed with multiple detachable legs. Ensure the connection is secure and the overall structural stability is maintained.
