Office Chair Leg Grinding

Admin October 11, 2026

The following methods can be referred to for grinding the legs of office chairs, with specific steps and key points as follows:

I. Pre-treatment Cleaning
Pre-treatment is the foundational step for grinding and requires targeted operations based on the material of the chair legs.

  • Wooden Chair Legs: First, use a stiff bristle brush or an electrician's wire brush to remove wood shavings and dust from the surface and crevices, preventing impurities from embedding into the wood during subsequent grinding. Then, lightly sweep the protruding burr areas with 120-grit sandpaper to initially remove flash and wood splinters, preventing the sandpaper from getting caught or the surface from being scratched during grinding.
  • Metal Chair Legs: First, thoroughly remove rust with a wire brush to ensure no oxide layer remains on the metal surface. If the rust is severe, a rust remover can be used in conjunction, but it must be completely dry before grinding.
  • Plastic Chair Legs: Wipe off oil stains from the surface with a damp cloth to ensure no chemical residues remain. For stubborn stains, a neutral detergent can be used for assistance, but corrosive solvents should be avoided.

II. Layered Grinding
Layered grinding requires selecting the grit size and direction of the sandpaper based on the material characteristics to achieve a balance between surface flatness and smoothness.

  • Wooden Chair Legs:
    • Rough Grinding Stage: Use 150-grit sandpaper to grind evenly along the wood grain direction, focusing on areas prone to hiding burrs such as edges, mortise-and-tenon joints, and carved crevices. The grinding force should be uniform to avoid excessive wear leading to uneven wood thickness.
    • Fine Grinding Stage: Switch to 300-grit sandpaper and continue grinding in the same direction to eliminate rough grinding marks and enhance surface smoothness. If a higher gloss is desired, an additional fine grinding step with 400-grit sandpaper can be added.
  • Metal Chair Legs:
    • First, grind rust and uneven areas with 240-grit sandpaper until the surface shows no significant bumps.
    • Then, perform polishing with 600-grit sandpaper to give the metal surface a matte finish. If a mirror finish is desired, further use polishing paste or mechanical polishing.
  • Plastic Chair Legs:
    • Select 200-400 grit sandpaper and grind along the plastic molding direction to avoid scuffing the surface by operating in the reverse direction.
    • Control the grinding force to prevent the plastic from overheating and deforming or generating static electricity that attracts dust.

III. Final Polishing
Final polishing is a crucial step to enhance the touch and aesthetic appeal of the chair legs.

  • General Method: Use ultra-fine sandpaper of 800 grit or higher to gently grind the entire surface, eliminating fine grinding marks.
  • Wooden Chair Legs: Wipe with a clean cotton cloth dipped in a small amount of woodworking wax. The wax layer can fill the wood pores and form a protective film, enhancing smoothness and moisture resistance.
  • Metal Chair Legs: If a mirror finish is not achieved, supplement with mechanical polishing or spray with clear varnish.
  • Plastic Chair Legs: After polishing, wipe clean with a dry cloth to avoid residual wax or polishing agent.
