Office Chair Leg Disassembly

Admin October 11, 2026

The disassembly methods for office chair legs vary depending on their type and fastening method, as detailed below:

For rusted metal chair legs: If the screws are difficult to remove due to rust, first apply WD40 penetrating oil to the gaps around the screw joints and wait about twenty minutes for it to fully penetrate and soften the rust layer. Then, use a wrench to grip the screw head and tap the handle of the wrench with a hammer to further break up the rust through vibration. If the screw head is hexagonal, insert a hex key and then slip a metal tube over it to extend the lever arm, increasing the torque during rotation. If all screws cannot be turned, try heating the screw area for a few seconds with a torch or soldering iron, using the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to break the rust layer, but be cautious as high temperatures may damage the chair's paint. If none of the above methods work, finally use an angle grinder to cut off the old screw heads, remove them, and then replace them with new screws for reinstallation.

Office swivel chair wheels (snap-ring wheels): These wheels are fixed by snapping the upper screw groove into the bottom end of the chair's footrest. To remove them, simply grasp the wheel and pull it outward. Be sure to apply even force to avoid pulling out only the plastic wheel and leaving the fixing iron rod inside the footrest. If the iron rod remains, use pliers to grip the end of the iron rod and slowly rotate and pull it outward.

Office swivel chair wheels (threaded wheels): The fixing screws of threaded wheels are screw-shaped and screwed directly into the bottom end of the chair's footrest. To remove them, simply grasp the wheel and rotate it to the left (counterclockwise) to gradually unscrew the screw. If the screw is severely rusted, first spray a small amount of lubricant and wait a moment before attempting to rotate it.

For generally inspected swivel chair legs: For regular swivel chairs, first step on the chair's footrest with your foot and grasp the seat cushion with both hands, then try to remove the footrest and gas cylinder simultaneously by shaking left and right and pulling upward. If the connection is tight due to long use, repeat this action multiple times. After removing the footrest, hold the gas cylinder and tap the bottom of it with a rubber mallet to loosen it from the tapered hole of the five-star base and pull it out. Control the force when tapping to avoid damaging the gas cylinder or footrest.
