Office Chair with Door on the Left Side

Admin October 10, 2026

When there is a door on the left side of an office chair, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as convenience of use, privacy, Feng Shui, and spatial layout.

1. Usage Habits and Convenience
If the left side of the office chair is close to the door, it is essential to evaluate the frequency of people entering and exiting. For scenarios requiring frequent access to the office, having the door on the left may enhance convenience by reducing the detour distance. However, if the door opens and closes frequently, the noise from the door, the airflow caused by people moving, or visual distractions may divert attention and reduce work efficiency. For example, in an open-plan office environment, seats near the door may experience decreased concentration due to constant interruptions. It is recommended to reduce noise by adjusting the door stopper or using a silent door lock.

2. Privacy
Having the left side close to the door reduces privacy during work. When the door is open, external individuals may directly observe the office area, causing discomfort, especially when handling sensitive documents or engaging in private conversations. Additionally, seats near the door are likely to become focal points for temporary stops or conversations, further disrupting the work rhythm. Privacy can be enhanced by adjusting the orientation of the desk (e.g., facing away from or to the side of the door) or setting up soft partitions such as screens or green plants.

3. Feng Shui Considerations
In traditional Feng Shui beliefs, an office chair should not directly face or be backed against a door, and caution is also advised when the door is on the left. The door is considered a 'Qi mouth,' and if the chair is unobstructed from the door, it is easy to be distracted by activities outside the door during work, leading to scattered energy and potentially affecting career development in the long run. Feng Shui suggests placing potted plants (such as broad-leafed Epipremnum aureum or Pachira aquatica) or small screens as partitions to create a layout that 'conceals wind and gathers Qi,' while also enhancing the vitality of the space. It is important to note that the height of the potted plants should exceed eye level to effectively block visual distractions.

4. Spatial Layout
Ensure that the relative position of the office chair and the door does not obstruct the passage. At least 60 centimeters of clearance should be left on the left side of the chair to prevent collisions or the need to squeeze through when people enter or exit. Additionally, the distance between the chair and the door should be coordinated with the overall office layout. For example, if the door is in a corner, the chair can be moved back slightly to create a semi-enclosed space using the wall; if the door is in the center, furniture placement should guide the flow of movement to avoid creating a 'through draft' or a sense of visual oppression. Reasonable layout can improve space utilization while enhancing comfort of use.
