Office Chair Left on Highway

Admin October 14, 2026

Leaving an office chair on the highway is a dangerous situation that requires prompt attention, as it can lead to traffic accidents or property damage.

Common Causes

  • Improper Cargo Securement: Some transport vehicles fail to properly secure their cargo during loading. For example, on January 3, 2025, a heavy-duty box truck illegally stacked folding chairs on its roof without securing them. During transit, the cargo suddenly scattered, hitting the windshield of a following car and scattering across a hundred meters of the road. Such incidents, caused by inadequate securement, not only pose a serious threat to vehicles behind but can also trigger chain-reaction accidents.
  • Irregular Loading: Some vehicles do not follow the prescribed loading methods and weight limits when loading cargo, causing the cargo to fall due to instability during transit. For instance, overloading or unevenly arranged cargo can easily slide off when the vehicle turns, brakes, or encounters bumpy roads.
  • Impact of Vehicle Driving Conditions: When driving at high speeds, vehicles are affected by factors such as wind and centrifugal force. If the cargo is lightweight or not securely fastened, it can easily be blown or thrown off. Additionally, sudden braking or sharp turns can also cause cargo to fall.

Hazards

  • Threat to Traffic Safety: Obstacles like office chairs left on the highway occupy road space and affect the normal flow of traffic. If drivers of following vehicles fail to notice and avoid them in time, collisions with the obstacles can occur, resulting in vehicle damage, personal injury, or even fatalities.
  • Traffic Congestion: When an office chair is left on the highway, it can trigger traffic accidents or cause vehicles to slow down and avoid it, leading to traffic congestion. This impact is particularly pronounced on roads with heavy traffic, affecting overall road efficiency.

Handling Methods

  • When Discovered by the Driver: If a driver discovers that their cargo has fallen, they should immediately stop in a safe location, set up warning signs, and promptly contact relevant authorities for handling. For example, on the evening of November 6, a light-duty truck in Xianyang City accidentally dropped a valuable smart chair on the highway between Qian County and Liquan County, which was later recovered by traffic police after 48 hours of searching.
  • When Discovered by Other Drivers: If other drivers notice obstacles like office chairs on the highway, they should promptly report them to the traffic police department so that relevant authorities can clear them quickly and ensure road safety. For example, in the early hours of May 5, a chair fell onto the middle of the highway in Huainan, Anhui Province, and a kind-hearted driver stopped and risked moving it to the roadside.
