Removal of Leather Surface from Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

To remove the leather surface of an office chair, other components need to be disassembled first before separating the leather surface. The disassembly methods vary for different types of chairs:

Genuine Leather Office Swivel Chair

  • Preparation Tools: Rubber mallet, Phillips or flat-head screwdriver, wrench, large scissors or crowbar pliers.
  • Operating Environment: Choose a spacious, clean space with a flat floor. Lay soft cloth or cardboard on the ground to prevent scratching the leather surface. Before disassembly, take photos of each connection part of the chair with a mobile phone or mark the parts with a marker pen.
  • Disassembly Steps:
    • Removing the Casters: Grasp the wheel and pull it outwards with force. If it doesn't come out, insert a flat-head screwdriver or crowbar pliers into the gap between the wheel and the chair leg and pry it with force. If the wheel is stuck due to hair or debris entanglement, first lay the chair down, clean the debris with long scissors or curved tweezers, and then repeat the above steps.
    • Removing the Gas Lift: Invert the chair to expose the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base. Use a rubber mallet to strike the lower part of the connection between the gas lift and the five-star base (avoid the green or black part with hydraulic oil) to loosen the locked retaining ring. If it is still tight after a few strikes, apply cooking oil to the connection for lubrication, let it stand for 1 - 2 hours, and then strike again. Do not use a metal hammer or wrench to pry it hard.
    • Removing the Seat Cushion: After removing the gas lift, invert the chair on the ground. Use a rubber mallet to evenly strike around the metal rim at the bottom of the seat cushion, and then pull it upwards with your hands. Repeat this several times to loosen the base. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the upper seat screws connecting the seat cushion and the chassis. Next, lightly strike the metal chassis with a hammer. Hold the hydraulic rod with one hand and step on the chassis with your foot to completely separate the two.
    • Removing the Chair Back: The disassembly of the chair back depends on the fixing method. Most chairs are fixed with screws. Use a screwdriver to find and remove the screws at the connection between the chair back and the seat cushion.

Ergonomic Chair (Without Using Professional Tools)

  • Preparation Tools: Hammer, hand drill (can be replaced with a hexagonal screwdriver), towel.
  • Disassembly Steps:
    • Removing the Headrest: If the headrest is directly inserted and fixed with screws, unscrew the screws to remove it.
    • Removing the Armrests: According to the armrest design, if the screws are at the back frame, unscrew them. If the screws are inside the seat cushion frame, you can unscrew them by hand due to space constraints.
    • Removing the Chair Back: Lay the chair down. Most of the connections between the chair back and the chassis are fixed with three screws. Unscrew these three screws, and the back frame can be removed.
    • Separating the Seat Cushion, Gas Rod, and Chair Legs: Disconnect the connection between the hydraulic rod and the chassis and the connection between the hydraulic rod and the chair legs.

  • Preparation Tools: Pliers, scissors, needle and thread.
  • Disassembly Steps: Use pliers to open about ten places on the bottom seat cushion where iron wires are wound. Remove the seat cushion and sponge, and then cut open the stitches in the middle part with scissors.
