Office Chair Leather Replacement
Admin October 14, 2026
There are mainly two ways to replace the leather on an office chair: DIY replacement and replacement by a maintenance center.

DIY Replacement
- Disassembly and Preparation: For those with strong hands-on skills, DIY replacement can be attempted. First, use pliers to remove the wire from the bottom cushion, detach the cushion and sponge, then use scissors to cut open the stitching in the middle section and remove the old leather. After that, cut out a new piece of leather of the same size based on the dimensions of the removed old leather.
- Replacement Methods: One method is to sew the new leather onto the cushion and then reassemble the cushion, sponge, etc., back onto the chair. Another method is to use strong self-adhesive leather repair patches. Cut the repair patch to the appropriate size according to the shape and size of the damaged or to-be-replaced area of the chair and stick it directly on. This method is relatively low-cost but requires some manual skills, and the replacement effect may not be as good as that done by professionals. It is suitable for small-area replacements or situations where the appearance requirements for the chair are not high.
Replacement by a Maintenance Center
- Replacement Process: In areas like Shanghai, the replacement of dining chair leather (similar for office chairs) by maintenance centers usually involves multiple steps. First, disassemble the old surface layer and clean the glue remaining on the frame. Then, repair the sponge and frame to ensure they are flat and firm. Next, recut and sew the new leather surface, precisely cutting the leather according to the size and shape of the chair and stitching it. After that, perform tensioning and edge-finishing to make the leather surface fit tightly with the frame. Finally, tighten the hardware and adjust the sitting feel to ensure the chair is comfortable to use.
- Material Selection: Different leather surface materials should be selected for different usage scenarios. Common materials include PU, PVC, microfiber, and genuine leather. PU leather is wear-resistant and stain-resistant with a relatively low price. PVC leather has good waterproof performance but slightly poor breathability. Microfiber leather has a feel close to that of genuine leather, is wear-resistant and breathable. Genuine leather has the best texture but is relatively expensive and requires careful maintenance.
- Acceptance Points: After the replacement is completed, acceptance can be carried out through actions such as sitting, leaning, rocking, observing, and touching. Check if the sitting feel is sagging, if the backrest fits well, and if the frame is stable. Observe whether the stitching is straight and has no skipped stitches, whether the edges are finished and have no lifted edges, and whether there are obvious wrinkles and bulges on the surface. Factors affecting the cost include the leather surface material, quantity used, process complexity, disassembly and assembly difficulty, number of chairs, whether the sponge or frame needs to be repaired, and whether door-to-door pickup and delivery are involved.
