Office Chair Leather Pad Replacement
Admin October 14, 2026
For replacing the leather pad of an office chair, you can either go to a professional service point or do it yourself. Details are as follows:

Replacement at a Professional Service Point
- Standardized Process: It includes a complete process of disassembly, frame inspection, sponge repair or replacement, leather cutting, stretching, edge finishing, and assembly, rather than simply sticking on new leather.
- Leather Selection: Reliable service points will actively display leather samples and introduce their characteristics. For example, microfiber leather is wear-resistant and easy to maintain, suitable for office chairs; top-grain cowhide is breathable and has a high-quality feel, but is more expensive. They will also recommend appropriate leather based on the chair type and usage scenario.
- Disassembly and Repair: After removing the old leather, professional service points will inspect the frame, sponge, and springs, and clearly inform you which parts need to be replaced and which can be repaired. For example, if the density of the seat cushion sponge is insufficient, an extra layer of high-elastic cotton can be added; if the sponge is collapsed and deformed, the old sponge will be pried off, and a new sponge pad will be cut and fitted according to the shape of the wooden board.
- Warranty and After-sales Service: After the chair is refurbished and reupholstered, it is guaranteed for at least one year under normal use. Reliable service points will clearly state the warranty scope, such as no blistering, no unstitching, and no shedding of the leather surface, but they are not responsible for scratches caused by sharp objects.
- Finding Channels: You can find service points through old stores in the local furniture repair market, online local life service platforms, and recommendations from leather stores in old furniture cities. For example, Hangzhou Yuhang Pigong Furniture Repair Workshop is based in Yuhang and serves the entire Hangzhou area. It has business practices in Xiaoshan District and can handle common problems of office chairs such as broken, cracked, discolored, and collapsed leather. It can provide customized solutions according to the original materials, structural characteristics, and usage scenarios of the chairs.
Self-replacement
- Preparing Tools and Materials: New leather (it is recommended to choose artificial leather or microfiber leather with a thickness of 1.0 - 1.5 mm), a screwdriver, scissors or a leather cutting knife, a tape measure, environmentally friendly white latex or special leather glue, a nail gun (manual or pneumatic, with nails about 10 - 15 mm long), old newspapers or cardboard (for pattern making). If the seat cushion sponge is collapsed and deformed, you also need to buy new high-resilience sponge with a thickness of about 2 - 3 cm.
- Disassembling the Old Leather and Cleaning the Frame: Turn the office chair upside down, and use a screwdriver to unscrew and remove the seat cushion fixed by screws in a counterclockwise direction; if it is fixed with nails or glue, use a crowbar to carefully separate it. After removing the seat cushion, cut and tear off the old leather, check if the wooden board is loose or moldy, and use a cloth dipped in alcohol to wipe the surface of the wooden board to remove residual glue and dust. If the sponge is deformed, pry off the old sponge, cut a new sponge pad, and fit it.
- Pattern Making and Cutting the New Leather: Lay the old leather flat on the table and cut it along the original edge as a paper pattern; if the old leather is damaged, use old newspapers to compare the shape of the seat cushion wooden board, leave an extra margin of about 5 cm for wrapping the edge, and then place the paper pattern on the new leather for cutting.
