Cracking of Office Chair Leather Surface

Admin October 17, 2026

The treatment method for cracking on the leather surface of an office chair should be selected according to the degree of cracking. Minor cracks can be repaired by yourself, while severe cracking is recommended to seek professional help. Daily maintenance and prevention are also essential.

Repair Methods for Minor Cracks

  • Clean the Cracked Area: Use a dedicated leather cleaner to wipe the cracked area and its surroundings. Avoid using products containing alcohol or strong alkalis. After cleaning, remove oil stains and dust, and let the leather dry naturally.
  • Fill the Cracks: Take a leather filler that matches the color of the chair seat. Use a toothpick or a small spatula to evenly apply it into the cracks. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes for it to dry, and then gently sand the surface with fine sandpaper of about 2000 grit to make it smooth.
  • Color Repair and Protection: Apply a thin layer of the same-color leather dye or color repair paste to the repaired area. Repeat this 2 to 3 times until the color is even. Finally, spray a layer of leather protector to enhance wear resistance. Before repairing, test the color and effect of the filler and dye on a small area to prevent a significant color difference from the original chair seat.

Treatment Methods for Severe Cracking

  • Seek Professional Repair: Contact an auto beauty shop or a leather repair agency. The technician will first clean the damaged area, fill the base layer with leather backing material, and then perform surface sanding, coloring, color fixing, and other procedures to restore the appearance and texture of the chair seat.
  • Self-adhesion of Leather: If the cracked area is large or cannot be repaired, you can cut leather of the same material and color and adhere it to the damaged area with dedicated glue. Sand the edges until they blend naturally. When dealing with severe cracking, do not use strong glues like 502 for self-repair, as they may harden the leather, result in poor adhesion, and aggravate the damage.

Daily Maintenance to Prevent Cracking

  • Reduce the Impact of Ultraviolet Rays and Cold Air: Try to place the office chair in a shaded area or use a sunshade to reduce the aging effect of ultraviolet rays on the leather. Avoid having the chair face the air conditioning outlet for a long time.
  • Regular Cleaning and Care: Clean the leather with a leather cleaner every 1 to 2 months, and then apply a leather care cream containing oil ingredients to replenish the moisture and nutrients of the leather and prevent it from drying out and hardening.
  • Avoid Scratches from Sharp Objects: Avoid scratching the chair seat with sharp objects such as keys, zippers, and high-heeled shoes. When sitting, try not to wear clothing with metal decorations. For old genuine leather chair seats that have been used for more than 5 years, due to severe leather aging, the repair effect is limited. It is recommended to conduct regular inspections and perform maintenance in advance.
