Keyboard Installation on Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

There are three ways to install a keyboard on an office chair, and the appropriate method should be chosen based on the chair type and usage scenario:

Option 1: Chair with Adjustable Armrests + Keyboard Tray
Some office chairs (e.g., model NB236) feature adjustable armrests that support the installation of a keyboard tray. When installing, place the curved side of the keyboard tray facing backward on the armrest to ensure a stable connection between the keyboard and the chair. The advantage of this option is that it does not require additional modifications to the chair structure, and the keyboard position can be adjusted with the height of the armrests, making it suitable for users who need flexible adjustment of the operating height. However, it should be noted that this option requires the chair armrests to have sufficient load-bearing capacity and width (usually โ‰ฅ40cm), otherwise the armrests may tilt or be damaged due to the weight of the keyboard.

Option 2: DIY Keyboard Tray
If the chair does not have a dedicated keyboard tray interface, a tray can be installed under the desk using a DIY approach:

  1. Material Selection: Use cabinet drawer slides (with a load-bearing capacity of โ‰ฅ10kg) paired with a custom board (solid wood or melamine board). The length of the slides is recommended to be โ‰ฅ50cm to support keyboard sliding operations;
  2. Installation Method: Drill holes under the desk to fix the slide brackets, ensuring that the tray is level and aligned with the front edge of the seat. If a mouse needs to be placed simultaneously, the tray size is recommended to be โ‰ฅ80x25cm (can accommodate a 108-key keyboard + mouse);
  3. Optimization Details: Rubber strips can be added to the edges of the tray to prevent slipping, or the slide damping can be adjusted to control the keyboard rebound speed. This option is relatively low-cost (approximately 200-500 yuan), but it requires the user to have some hands-on skills and sufficient space under the desk (height โ‰ฅ15cm).

Option 3: Use a Tilted Standing Chair
Specialized standing chairs like the LeanChair have a support platform at waist height where a keyboard and mouse can be placed directly. The design features a 135ยฐ tilt angle between the backrest and the seat, requiring the user to operate in a semi-standing position, suitable for short-term office work or in combination with a height-adjustable desk. It should be noted that such chairs cannot support a conventional sitting posture, and the keyboard position is fixed, offering lower flexibility, making them more suitable for users who pursue a specific healthy office posture.

Additional Recommendations:

  • If the chair is an ergonomic chair (e.g., Wuqibao computer chair), the keyboard operating posture can be indirectly optimized by adjusting the seat height and backrest angle in combination with a height-adjustable desk;
  • When purchasing a ready-made keyboard tray, it is necessary to confirm its compatibility with the chair's wheelbase to avoid interference between the tray and the chair wheels.
