Fitting an Office Chair into a Small Car

Admin October 12, 2026

It is feasible to fit an office chair into a small car, but appropriate methods must be selected based on the car model and chair type, with attention to details such as disassembly and securing. Here are the specific steps:

1. Disassembly and Packaging
Most office chairs consist of components such as a backrest, seat cushion, base, and armrests. Direct handling may be difficult due to their large size. It is recommended to disassemble them step by step according to the manufacturer's instructions: first remove detachable armrests and headrests, then separate the backrest from the seat cushion, and finally disassemble the base (e.g., the five-star foot). After disassembly, place larger components (such as the backrest and seat cushion) into large woven or sealed bags to prevent metal or plastic edges from scratching the car's interior; small components (such as screws and gas cylinders) can be placed in a small box and labeled to prevent loss.

2. Space Adaptation and Stacking

  • Compact Cars: The trunk depth is usually less than 80 centimeters, so components must be stacked reasonably. For example, lay the seat cushion flat on the bottom of the trunk, stand the backrest upright against the rear seat, place the base (five-star foot) diagonally in a corner, and tuck small items like armrests into gaps. If there is still insufficient space, try placing some components in the pass-through between the rear seat and the trunk (ensure it does not affect driving safety).
  • SUVs or Hatchbacks: The rear seats can be folded down to expand the space. Then, stack the disassembled components in layers: place the seat cushion and base on the bottom layer, the backrest in the middle layer, and small items like armrests on the top layer. Fill gaps with soft materials (such as towels) to prevent components from shifting.

3. Securing and Safety
Components shifting during driving can pose a safety hazard, so they must be secured throughout the journey. Lay anti-slip mats in the trunk or on the car floor to increase friction; use straps or elastic cords to connect components to the car's anchor points (such as trunk hooks or seat metal bars) to ensure they are secure. If components are light, press them down with heavy objects (such as suitcases) to prevent sliding during sudden braking.

4. Differences in Car Models and Chair Types

  • Sedans: Ordinary office chairs (especially those with armrests or headrests) may be too tall or long to fit directly into the trunk and may need to be disassembled first or a foldable model selected.
  • Foldable Ergonomic Chairs: Some models fold to a thickness of less than 15 centimeters and can be placed directly in the rear seat or trunk of a sedan without disassembly, offering greater convenience.

5. Handling Special Situations
If transporting the chair via a ride-hailing service, communicate the chair's size and disassembly requirements with the driver in advance to avoid disputes over excessive space occupation. If the chair is too large or the car's space is insufficient, negotiate additional fees or opt for freight services.
