Office Chair Instability Repair
The repair of an unstable office chair should be carried out according to the specific cause. Common causes and repair steps are as follows:

1. Check the Casters
- Confirm Contact Status: Place the chair upright and observe whether each caster makes even contact with the ground. If some casters are suspended, it may be due to an uneven floor or damaged casters.
- Check Caster Integrity: Invert the chair and check if the casters are bent, deformed, or broken. If the casters are damaged, a complete set needs to be replaced (it is difficult to replace them individually). You can contact the manufacturer to provide the model for ordering or take the old casters to an office supplies store for matching.
2. Replace the Casters
- Remove the Old Casters:
- If the casters are snap-on type, simply pull them out by hand or use a flat-head screwdriver inserted into the gap between the caster and the chair contact point as a lever for assistance;
- If the casters are fixed with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and then remove them.
- Lubricate the Sockets: Spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant on the caster sockets at the base of the chair or apply a pea-sized amount of Vaseline to reduce installation resistance.
- Install the New Casters: Align the caster rods with the sockets and gently push them in by hand until they are securely fastened. If they are not fully fixed, gently tap the base of the caster rods with a rubber mallet (avoid tapping the bottom of the wheels to prevent damage).
- Test Stability: Invert the chair and sit on it to check if it rolls smoothly. If it still wobbles, further investigation of other causes is required.
3. Check the Seat Plate
If the chair still tilts after replacing the casters, place the chair on its side and check if the metal seat plate (square steel plate) at the bottom of the seat is deformed or broken. If the seat plate is damaged, contact a professional repair person for replacement.
4. Other Possible Causes and Solutions
- Uneven Floor: Move the chair to another location for testing. If the wobbling disappears, adjust the floor or use floor mats.
- Uneven Chair Leg Length/Loose Connecting Parts:
- Wooden chairs may have different leg lengths due to manufacturing errors or long-term wear and tear. Adjust the chair legs or raise the shorter leg with a pad;
- If a creaking sound is heard when the chair wobbles, check if the screws and bolts are loose and tighten them with a screwdriver.
- Worn Foot Pads: The่ฑ่ฝ (detachment) of rubber or plastic foot pads will cause the chair legs to directly contact the ground. Replace them with new foot pads.
- Damaged Frame: The tenons of a mortise-and-tenon solid wood chair may become loose or cracked. Use wood glue to reinforce the tenons or contact a professional for repair.
Safety Reminder: If the chair is an electric height-adjustable chair or has a complex structure (such as a pneumatic rod or electric components), it is advisable to contact a professional for inspection and repair. Avoid using damaged chairs in public places (such as those with cracked wooden strips or exposed nails) and notify the management personnel.
