Causes of Office Chair Instability

Admin October 09, 2026

The instability of an office chair when sitting may be caused by the following reasons:

  1. Uneven floor
If there are tile joints, wooden floor depressions, or soft mats laid on the floor, the four legs of the chair may not be able to touch the ground evenly at the same time. Especially for chairs with a large leg span, even a height difference of just a few millimeters on the floor can cause noticeable wobbling when sitting. It is recommended to check the flatness of the floor or replace it with a hard, flat mat.

  2. Inconsistent leg lengths
Production errors or long-term use leading to wear on one side of the chair legs can result in different lengths of the four legs. This problem is more common in wooden chairs or old chairs, and is manifested by the chair always tilting to a fixed side. A level can be used to check the height of the chair legs or contact after-sales service for adjustment.

  3. Loose connecting components
When the screws or bolts at the connection between the seat and the chair legs are loose, shaking the chair will produce a creaking sound or a gap can be felt at the connection. If not addressed promptly, the looseness can worsen and even lead to structural disintegration. Regularly check and tighten the screws, and replace the connecting parts if necessary.

  4. Worn foot pads
When the rubber or plastic foot pads at the bottom of the chair are worn or fall off, the metal or wooden chair legs come into direct contact with the ground, which can easily cause wobbling due to an uneven or slippery contact surface. New foot pads can be replaced or anti-slip pads can be used temporarily to alleviate the problem.

  5. Damaged frame structure
Long-term stress on solid wood chairs with mortise-and-tenon joints can cause the tenons to loosen, crack, or break. Such problems may not be easily noticeable to the naked eye, but when sitting, the chair may feel soft or lean to one side. Check the mortise-and-tenon connections and, if necessary, have them professionally repaired or replace the chair.

  6. Faulty gas lift
Wear on the seal ring of the gas lift, nitrogen leakage, or a clogged gas valve can lead to unstable gas pressure, manifested by the chair wobbling up and down or automatically descending after being raised. Such problems require contacting a professional repair technician to replace the gas lift. Do not disassemble it yourself.

  7. Collapsed seat cushion foam
When the foam inside the seat cushion ages or the filling deforms, the support force decreases, and when a person sits down, their buttocks directly touch the hard base, creating a feeling of instability. A new seat cushion can be replaced or contact after-sales service for repair.
