Insect Infestation in Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

Insect infestation in office chairs is primarily related to the material, environment, and maintenance. It can be eliminated through cleaning, using pesticides, improving the environment, and other methods. New chairs can be pre-coated with varnish to prevent infestation.

There are three main reasons for insect infestation in office chairs. Firstly, material factors: the raw materials of office chairs are mostly wood, bamboo, or textiles. The cellulose and starch substances in these materials can serve as food sources for pests, providing a material basis for insect growth. Secondly, environmental factors: a humid environment can easily lead to water retention inside the wood, providing a good hatching environment for insect eggs. It may also cause wood decay, further attracting insect aggregation. Thirdly, maintenance issues: if the chair has not been maintained for a long time, the dust and dirt accumulated on the surface and in the crevices can also become a breeding ground for pests.

The methods to eliminate insects on office chairs vary depending on the situation. For general cases, first, remove and clean the items from the infested office chair. Items that cannot be washed should be placed in the sun to dry. Wipe the office chair several times with a disinfectant, and ensure thorough ventilation and drying after cleaning. For wooden office chairs infested with wood-boring beetles or termites, a small amount of pesticide solution (such as dichlorvos) can be dripped into the insect holes. Alternatively, ground chili peppers or Sichuan peppercorns can be stuffed into the holes. Apply paraffin oil to the infested areas for 10 consecutive days. However, pesticides and paraffin oil should not be used on furniture such as cabinets that come into contact with food. For springtails, wipe the office desk (including the office chair) with a damp cloth, especially in the corners and crevices. Keep the room dry, open windows for ventilation, and avoid a humid environment. Use specialized pesticides or repellents to spray on the office chair and its surroundings. If there are a large number of springtails, it is advisable to hire a professional pest control company for removal.

In addition, preventing insect infestation in office chairs is also important. After purchasing a new office chair, it is best to apply a coat of varnish on the unpainted wooden surfaces inside the furniture. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prevents insect infestation.
