Industrial Waste in Office Chair Production

Admin October 11, 2026

The use of industrial waste does exist in the production of office chairs.

In Anji County, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, some seat manufacturing enterprises use 'recycled sponge', which is made by recycling sponge waste and bonding it with glue, to produce various types of seats, including office chairs. The average cost of this recycled sponge is about half that of the original sponge, making it popular among some seat manufacturers. However, there are also many problems associated with the use of recycled sponge. Since it is made from recycled waste, it may contain yellow and white hard lumps and debris from hardened glue, as well as other impurities, resulting in a rough and hard feel, poor elasticity, and significantly insufficient support. More seriously, a large amount of glue may be used in the production process of recycled sponge, and this glue may contain harmful substances such as formaldehyde, leading to excessive formaldehyde levels in office chairs and posing a threat to human health.

In addition to recycled sponge, some enterprises also use waste building materials to produce office chairs. These waste building materials may also contain various harmful substances, such as heavy metals and formaldehyde, and their structural strength and stability may not meet the usage requirements of office chairs, posing safety hazards.

Furthermore, consumers should also be vigilant about the use of industrial waste when purchasing office chairs. Some consumers have found obvious traces of industrial waste on the seat cushions and backrests of home leisure chairs (which can also be used in office settings) purchased on e-commerce platforms such as Pinduoduo. These traces may manifest as uneven color, rough texture, and unpleasant odors, all of which are obvious signs of the use of industrial waste.

To safeguard their own health and safety, consumers should choose reputable brands and channels when purchasing office chairs, carefully check the product materials and test reports, and avoid buying office chairs made with industrial waste. At the same time, relevant departments should also strengthen supervision and crack down on the production of office chairs using industrial waste to safeguard market order and consumer rights.
