Incomplete Rebound of Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

The incomplete rebound of an office chair may be caused by mechanical jamming, airbag failure, damage to the adjustment mechanism, or issues with the locking device, requiring targeted troubleshooting and resolution.

  1. Mechanical Jamming
If the seat switch is not reset or foreign objects (such as coins or keys) get stuck in the slide rail, the rebound will be obstructed. First, check if the switch is in place, clear any debris from the slide rail, or gently pat the backrest to assist in resetting. If the adjustment lever/button is stuck, check if its travel is smooth, clear any debris from the gaps in the adjustment mechanism (gears,ๆ‹จ็‰‡ - paddles, etc.), and ensure that the components move freely.

  2. Airbag Failure (for airbag seats only)
An air leak in the airbag will cause the seat to lose its elasticity, similar to a flat tire. Focus on checking whether the air control valve and the changeover switch at the bottom of the seat are working properly. If the air leak is severe, contact a professional repair shop to reinflate or replace the airbag. Do not disassemble it yourself to avoid the risk of high-pressure nitrogen leakage.

  3. Damage to the Adjustment Mechanism

  • Manual Adjustment Chairs: If the adjustment lever is stuck, use compressed air or a small brush to clean the gaps in the mechanism. Spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant on the moving parts (such as paddles and gear shafts) and operate repeatedly to allow it to penetrate. If the backrest cannot rebound when leaning back, the control lever may have been pushed into the fixing hole. Fully pull out the control lever, manually assist the backrest in returning to its position, and then refix it.
  • Gas Spring/Base Issues: If the backrest cannot be locked in place or cannot rebound when leaning back, pull out the gas spring to check if the control paddle is damaged or stuck. Clean and lubricate it and then test. If the entire recline mechanism is damaged, the base needs to be replaced (which requires removing the seat cushion and is a complex operation). If the height adjustment fails, the gas spring may have an air leak and needs to be replaced with professional tools. Non-professionals should not attempt this themselves.
  • Loose or Broken Components: Check if the screws are loose and tighten them. If components such as adjustment paddles or springs are broken or deformed, you can purchase universal replacement parts on e-commerce platforms.
  1. Locking Device Issues
If the chair has a recline locking function, a locking handle or lever that is not fully reset will cause the mechanism to jam. Operate the locking device repeatedly to ensure smooth movement. Check if there are any foreign objects stuck or if there is deformation or damage in areas such as the metal catch. If necessary, clean or replace the components.
