Office Chair Immobility Issues

Admin October 09, 2026

Immobility issues with office chairs may involve problems with multiple components and require troubleshooting based on specific symptoms.

Wheels Not Moving

  • Foreign Objects Stuck: Check for paper scraps, hair, threads, or other debris around the wheels. Use tweezers or a soft brush to carefully clean them, avoiding damage to the wheel structure.
  • Wheel Damage: Observe if the rubber part is severely worn or cracked. If rolling is affected, replace the wheel with a new one, ensuring the model matches.
  • Axle Issues: Check if the wheel axle is loose or rusty. Tighten the screws if loose; spray rust remover to eliminate rust and then add lubricating oil (such as WD-40) to restore rotation.
  • Floor Problems: Adjust the chair's position to a flat, smooth surface (such as tiles or wooden floors) to avoid increased resistance from carpets or uneven surfaces.
  • Dust and Dirt Accumulation: Regularly wipe the wheel surface with a neutral cleaner and a soft cloth to reduce friction.
  • Old Wheels: After long-term use, wheels may become worn and aged, requiring replacement to restore smoothness.

Backrest Not Moving (Unable to Return to Upright Position After Reclining)

  • Improper Operation: Check if the control lever under the seat has been accidentally pushed in or not fully pulled out. Adjust it to the correct position to release the lock.
  • Foreign Object Blockage: Clean the bottom of the backrest, the pivot area, and the gaps in the base for any loose clothing, data cables, or other foreign objects that may cause physical obstruction.
  • Mechanical Failures:
    • Hydraulic System Failure: If the hydraulic rod (gas lift) is damaged, contact a professional for repair or replacement.
    • Lock Block/Tongue Failure: When the lock tongue moves abnormally, is worn, or breaks, disassemble and replace the lock block assembly.
    • Lock Post Deformation: If the lock post is bent, causing misalignment and jamming, correct or replace the lock post.
    • Control Tab Damage: When the metal tab is broken or deformed, replace the base control components.
    • Spring Failure: If the thick spring loses elasticity or breaks, replace it with a new one to restore the reset tension.

Other Component Immobility and Lubrication Issues

  • Height Adjustment Stuttering/Noises: Apply lubricating grease (such as white lithium grease) at the connection between the base and the gas lift to reduce metal friction.
  • Inflexible Rotation: Apply white lithium grease (NLGI 2 viscosity grade) to the base turntable track to restore smooth rotation.
  • Loose Armrests/Difficult Adjustment: Disassemble the armrest height adjustment buckle and apply a small amount of lubricating grease to the internal rack to reduce wear.
  • Backrest Rebound Failure: When the plastic gear set of a synchronous backrest is worn, apply food-grade lubricating grease to restore rebound function.
  • Poor Caster Rolling: Each year, use a cotton swab dipped in lubricating grease to coat the wheel axle to reduce the impact of dust friction.
