Office Chair Hydraulic Repair

Admin October 22, 2026

Repairing the hydraulic rod of an office chair requires targeted measures based on the type of fault. Here are some common faults and their repair methods:

I. Fault Diagnosis

  1. Complete inability to adjust height: This may be caused by insufficient hydraulic oil, internal blockage, seal failure, or a stuck or leaking valve in the pneumatic rod.
  2. Uneven or stuck height adjustment: Debris or rust at the connection of the lifting rod, or lubrication failure and internal structural wear.
  3. Automatic sinking: Aging seals causing hydraulic oil leakage or slow internal gas leakage.
  4. Abnormal noise during adjustment: Lack of lubrication in the hydraulic rod or loose components.

II. Repair Methods

  1. Seal replacement: If the seal is damaged, invert the chair, disassemble the connection between the hydraulic rod and the seat, replace it with a suitable sealing gasket, and then reassemble.
  2. Cleaning and lubrication: Clean the connection of the lifting rod, spray lubricating oil (such as sewing machine oil or WD-40), and move it back and forth to allow the oil to penetrate inside.
  3. Valve treatment: If the control valve is faulty, first clean the valve to remove impurities; if ineffective, replace it with a new valve.
  4. Screw tightening: Use a wrench to tighten the screws of loose components to eliminate abnormal noise.
  5. Inflation operation: If the air pressure is insufficient, locate the inflation port at the bottom of the chair and use a manual or electric air pump to slowly inflate to 0.5-1.0 MPa.

III. Overall Replacement

If the internal damage to the hydraulic rod is severe (such as seal failure or a stuck valve that cannot be repaired), an overall replacement is required:

  1. Safe disassembly: Use pipe wrenches, rubber mallets, and other tools to separate the five-star base from the seat, avoiding violent disassembly.
  2. Precise measurement: Measure the total length, pipe diameter, and stroke of the old rod, and purchase a suitable new rod.
  3. Installation and testing: Install the new hydraulic rod according to the original structure and test whether the height adjustment function is normal.

IV. Safety Precautions

  1. The hydraulic rod contains high-pressure nitrogen gas. Do not drill, saw, heat, or disassemble it, as this may cause an explosive ejection and result in injury.
  2. Wear safety goggles and gloves during repairs, operate on a flat surface, and ensure the seat is placed face down when inverting the chair.
  3. If you lack repair experience or the problem is complex, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.

V. Daily Maintenance

  1. Regularly clean the surface of the hydraulic rod, avoid overloading, and lubricate moving parts every six months.
  2. Avoid frequent rapid height adjustments and keep the rod clean and dust-free to extend its service life.
