Office Chair Hydraulic Oil Leakage
Admin October 16, 2026
If an office chair experiences hydraulic oil leakage, it should be immediately taken out of use and handled according to standard procedures to ensure safety.

1. Immediate Disuse and Relocation
Hydraulic rod oil leakage is a clear sign of system failure. It must be immediately stopped from being used and the chair should be moved to a location that does not obstruct passage. Continued use may lead to lifting malfunction, inability to lock the height, slow automatic sinking, or even accidental falls or collisions due to structural failure.
2. Identify the Leak Point and Cause
- Leak Location: Usually concentrated around the piston rod extension end, possibly accompanied by oil stains spreading to the base or seat surface.
- Common Causes:
- Seal Failure: Aging, hardening, or breakage of polyurethane or other material seals, leading to hydraulic oil leakage.
- Component Damage: Scratches, rust, or fractures on the piston rod surface, or casting defects or insufficient machining accuracy inside the hydraulic rod.
- Oil Issues: Contamination of hydraulic oil (e.g., with impurities) or substandard quality, accelerating seal wear.
- Installation Problems: Seals not aligned properly, improper compression, or system oil pressure exceeding design standards.
- Oil Hose Aging: After long-term use, plastic oil hoses or connectors may age and crack (common in low-end products).
3. Handling Methods
- Replace the Hydraulic Rod: Pneumatic/hydraulic lifting rods are high-pressure sealed structures and are disposable components that cannot be disassembled for repair. Replacing with a new, quality-certified rod usually costs a few dozen yuan and is a safe and economical solution to thoroughly resolve the issue.
- Contact After-Sales Service: If the chair is still under warranty, it is recommended to contact the seller or manufacturer first and have the components replaced by professionals to avoid safety hazards caused by self-operation.
4. Safety Warnings
- Strictly Prohibit Disassembling Old Pneumatic Rods: They are filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. Drilling, sawing, heating, or disassembling may cause an explosion, resulting in serious injury.
- Clean Up Leaked Oil: Hydraulic oil may be toxic or corrosive. It should be absorbed with a dry cloth and properly disposed of to avoid environmental pollution or causing slippery floors.
5. Daily Prevention
- Avoid Overloading or Vigorous Use: Do not exceed the chair's stated weight capacity. Avoid violent impacts, tilting, or frequent lifting and lowering to reduce the risk of seal wear.
- Regular Inspections: Observe the surface of the hydraulic rod and the connection points at the base for oil stains every month and promptly address any abnormalities.
