Office Chair Hydraulic Failure

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair hydraulic failure can be caused by issues such as seal problems, control valve malfunctions, lack of lubrication, loose components, insufficient air pressure, cylinder damage, failures in other components, or malfunctioning lift locks. Repairs should be carried out based on the specific cause.

  1. Seal Problems: Poor internal sealing in the hydraulic rod is often due to damaged sealing rings. To repair, invert the chair and carefully use tools to disassemble the connection between the hydraulic rod and the seat. Check the sealing rings. If damaged, purchase compatible sealing rings for replacement and then reassemble.
  2. Control Valve Malfunctions: A malfunctioning control valve can affect hydraulic function. First, try cleaning the valve to remove any impurities. If the problem persists after cleaning, replace the control valve with a new one.
  3. Lack of Lubrication: Insufficient lubrication in the hydraulic rod can lead to uneven lifting. Use professional hydraulic oil or lubricant and apply an appropriate amount to the moving parts of the hydraulic rod. Then, repeatedly lift and lower the chair to evenly distribute the lubricant.
  4. Loose Components: Loose components can also trigger hydraulic failure. Use a wrench or other tools to tighten any loose screws.
  5. Insufficient Air Pressure: For pneumatic lift chairs, prolonged use can lead to seal aging or gas leakage, resulting in insufficient air pressure. Lift the chair's control lever and observe for any gas leakage sounds or slow lifting. If air pressure is insufficient, replace the cylinder. Purchase genuine nitrogen cylinders to avoid safety hazards caused by low-purity gases.
  6. Cylinder Damage: Wear or breakage of internal components such as pistons and sealing rings in the cylinder can cause hydraulic failure. Invert the chair and tap the edge of the base with a rubber mallet to separate the base from the seat. Remove the fixing screws and take out the old cylinder, taking care to protect the seat surface. Align the new cylinder with the base holes, secure it with screws, ensure a tight seal, and finally test the lifting function to confirm there is no jamming or leakage.
  7. Failures in Other Components: Small component issues such as loose connectors, piston sticking, or spring failure can also lead to hydraulic failure. For sticking connectors/pistons, spray lubricant on the piston rod and move the control lever up and down multiple times to try to resolve the sticking. If ineffective, disassemble the cylinder to clean internal debris or replace the piston. For spring failure, check if the springs in the lifting mechanism are broken or deformed and replace them with springs of the same specifications.
  8. Lift Lock Malfunctions: Hydraulic system leakage, worn locks, or loose components can prevent the chair from maintaining a fixed height. For hydraulic system failures, check for hydraulic oil leakage and replace sealing rings or hydraulic components. For worn locks, disassemble the lock, check for wear on internal gears or catches, and replace with a new lock. For loose components, tighten all screws and nuts to ensure the lifting system is structurally stable.

Repairing the hydraulic rod of an office chair can be dangerous. Ensure the chair is in a stable state before operating. If you lack repair experience or are unable to resolve the issue, it is advisable to seek help from professional repair personnel.
