Office Chair Hydraulic Explosion
Office chair hydraulic explosion (pneumatic lifting chair explosion) is a possible and serious situation that requires high attention and preventive measures.

Pneumatic lifting chairs have a pneumatic rod installed between the seat and the chassis, filled with nitrogen at 1 to 2 atmospheres of pressure and sealed with a seal ring. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers may use air (containing oxygen) instead of nitrogen to reduce costs. Oxygen reacts violently with the lubricating oil in the pneumatic pump due to friction, posing an explosion risk. Additionally, if there are defects in the cylinder structure or materials, such as the inclusion of inferior materials or aging parts leading to cracks in the pneumatic rod, an explosion may occur when the pressure exceeds the chair's limit when someone sits on it.
Typical Cases of Pneumatic Lifting Chair Explosions
- 2013 Case: Ms. Liu was sitting on an online-purchased lifting swivel chair to dry her hair when the chair suddenly exploded. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through her body from below, entering her abdominal cavity and leaving more than ten metal fragments in her abdomen and intestines, resulting in extremely severe injuries.
- 2010 Case: A woman in Fujian fell unconscious immediately after her pneumatic lifting chair exploded, suffering injuries to her buttocks and a torn rectum, requiring emergency surgery for repair.
- 2009 Case: A 14-year-old boy named Xiaogang in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was adjusting the height of his pneumatic chair when it exploded. The rod inserted into his body from the buttocks, damaging multiple blood vessels, and he ultimately died from excessive blood loss despite rescue efforts.
Preventive Measures
- Choose Genuine Products: Prioritize brands that have passed national safety certifications. When purchasing, flip the chair over to inspect the pneumatic pump; genuine products will clearly display the manufacturer's information. Avoid buying "three-no" products (products without a manufacturer's name, production address, or quality certification).
- Standardize Usage Habits: Reduce the frequency of sliding the seat and avoid frequent adjustments or rotations of the lifting chair to prevent wear on the seal ring or excessive stress on the pneumatic rod. Do not disassemble the chair arbitrarily to avoid damaging the internal structure or triggering safety hazards.
- Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Regularly check the surface of the pneumatic rod for cracks, deformation, or air leakage. If any abnormalities are found, stop using it immediately and contact a professional maintenance technician to replace the parts.
Although pneumatic lifting chair explosions are rare events, the consequences can be disastrous when they do occur. Consumers need to raise their safety awareness and strictly control the process from selection, usage, to maintenance to minimize risks.
