Office Chair Hydraulic Chair Explosion
The essence of an office chair hydraulic chair explosion is the bursting of the gas spring, which is closely related to the quality of the gas spring and usage habits. It can be prevented through standardized purchasing and correct usage.

Causes of Gas Spring Bursting
- Poor Quality of the Gas Spring: The qualified gas springs from reputable manufacturers are filled with high-purity inert nitrogen, which is stable and safe to control. A qualified gas spring can withstand a pressure of 2000 jin. However, unscrupulous manufacturers, in order to save costs, replace nitrogen with cheap ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air continuously reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, causing continuous rusting and heat accumulation. This turns the gas spring into a sealed, continuously pressurized pressure cooker, with the internal pressure soaring and the external tube wall becoming thinner and more brittle, ultimately leading to a possible explosion. In addition, if the structure or material of the gas cylinder is substandard, such as the sleeve material being of inferior quality or having cracks, it cannot withstand the pressure, resulting in an explosion.
- Usage Habit Issues: During use, small actions such as suddenly sitting down hard or repeatedly adjusting the height through lifting and lowering can quietly consume the lifespan of the gas spring and increase the risk of explosion.
Hazards of Explosion Accidents
Such explosion accidents are extremely destructive. Over the past decade or so, more than forty similar tragedies have occurred in China. For example, in 2013, Ms. Liu in Xiamen was sitting on an online-purchased swivel lifting chair to blow-dry her hair after taking a bath when the chair exploded without warning. A steel rod with a diameter of 3 centimeters shot through her body from bottom to top like a cannonball, piercing into her abdomen. Dozens of metal fragments were removed from her abdomen and intestines. Ms. Liu in Xiamen also encountered a similar situation. After the chair exploded, she was rushed to the hospital, and the hydraulic rod of the lifting chair was fully inserted into her body. In 2009, an elderly person in Shandong was injured by a lifting chair, with a 20-centimeter-long gas spring fully inserted into his body. A 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, even died as a result.
Preventive Measures
To avoid such accidents, when purchasing chairs, choose reputable manufacturers and check whether the gas spring at the base has clear markings and testing certifications. Sit down gently and avoid frequently adjusting the lifting mechanism.
