How to Lower an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

There are several ways to lower an office chair, and you can choose the appropriate method based on the type of chair:

1. Pneumatic Adjustment (Most Common Method) This applies to modern office chairs equipped with a pneumatic rod. When adjusting, sit steadily on the chair, ensuring that both feet touch the ground and your body weight is evenly distributed to avoid difficulty in adjustment or chair wobbling due to a shifted center of gravity. Locate the height adjustment lever on the right side under the seat (usually a long lever). Some chairs may have two levers, so distinguish between the height adjustment and the backrest recline functions. Hold the lever with your hand and gently lift it upwards. You will feel the lock of the pneumatic rod being released. Lift your body slightly and keep the lever lifted, relying on your own weight to slowly sink down, and the chair will descend accordingly. When the seat reaches the ideal height (both feet are completely flat on the ground and the knees are bent at a 90ยฐ angle), release the lever to lock the height. Note: Maintain a steady motion during the adjustment process to avoid sudden release of the lever causing the chair to rebound.

2. Mechanical Adjustment (Screw/Rotary Type) This is more common in old-fashioned or simply structured office chairs. Locate the adjustment knob (usually circular) in the center or on the side of the chair base, or a screw with a fixing function. To lower the height, rotate the knob clockwise (follow the principle of 'tighten right, loosen left', but it is usually clockwise for lowering); for old-fashioned chairs with fixing screws, first use a tool (such as a wrench) to loosen the screw counterclockwise. While rotating the knob or loosening the screw, manually press the seat down to the desired height. After adjustment, be sure to tighten the screw clockwise again to fix it and prevent the seat from accidentally descending during use. Tip: Pay attention to the force when adjusting old-fashioned chairs to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.

3. Inflatable Adjustment This applies to chairs equipped with an inflatable rod. Locate the knob on the rod (usually located in the center of the chair base). Rotate the knob clockwise to lower the chair height and counterclockwise to raise it. Keep the chair steady during adjustment to avoid wobbling due to changes in rod pressure. Note: Regularly check the airtightness of the inflatable rod for inflatable adjustment. If air leakage or adjustment difficulties are found, replace the rod in a timely manner.

4. General Simple Method This applies to some simply structured office chairs. Locate the handle on the support rod (usually located on the side of the chair base). To lower it, sit on the chair or press the seat down with your hand while lifting the handle. The chair will descend due to gravity. After adjusting to the ideal height, release the handle to lock it. Tip: Ensure that the support rod structure of the chair is intact with this method to avoid adjustment failure due to a damaged handle.
