Homemade Back Cushion for Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

If you want to make a back cushion for an office chair yourself, you can refer to the following method for making a triangular back cushion:

Material and Tool Preparation

  • Fabric: Prioritize skin-friendly and breathable materials. New cotton fabric and flannel are common options. It is even more recommended to use old clothes, such as cotton T-shirts, soft sweaters, or denim, which are eco-friendly and enable resource reuse.
  • Filling materials: Pearl cotton is lightweight and has good elasticity. PP cotton is soft and fluffy. Sponge has strong support. You can choose according to your personal needs for the softness and support of the back cushion.
  • Tools: Scissors are used for cutting the fabric; needles and thread (or a sewing machine) are used for stitching; a ruler and a water-soluble pen are used for accurate measurement and marking of dimensions; if you want to make a removable and washable style, you need to prepare a zipper; if you want to enhance the aesthetics, you can prepare decorative items such as ribbons and buttons.

Ergonomic Design and Size Selection

  • Angle: According to ergonomic principles, 110ยฐ - 115ยฐ is the golden support angle for a static sitting posture. This angle can effectively support the lumbar spine, disperse body pressure, and relieve fatigue caused by prolonged sitting.
  • Size: The small size (40ร—30ร—20cm) is more suitable for an office chair and can be used as a lumbar support. Before cutting the fabric, be sure to accurately draw the required angle on the pattern or fabric to ensure that the back cushion meets ergonomic requirements.

Production Method (Fabric Sewing Method)

  1. Design and cutting: According to the selected size and angle, draw two identical triangles on the back of the fabric. An extra 1cm seam allowance should be reserved on each side to leave space for subsequent stitching. If you are using old clothes for renovation, you can directly lay the clothes flat and draw and cut the pattern on them.
  2. Stitching: Place the two pieces of fabric with their right sides facing each other and stitch along the edges. When stitching, leave an opening of about 10 - 15 centimeters unstitched for subsequent turning and filling.
  3. Turning and filling: Turn the fabric back to the right side through the opening. At this point, the basic shape of the pillowcase is formed. Start filling the material. Filling it to 7 - 8 full is the best, which can ensure that the finished product is fluffy and soft. If it is overfilled, the back cushion will become stiff and affect the comfort of use.
  4. Closing the opening: Finally, use the blind stitch method to manually stitch the opening closed, making the stitches hidden and aesthetically pleasing, and making the appearance of the back cushion neater.
