Heightening Wheels for Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

Heightening the wheels of an office chair can be achieved by replacing them with larger-sized wheels, adding heightening pads, using caster chair foot covers, or utilizing high-caster fixing devices. Here are the specific methods:

1. Replacing with Larger-Sized Wheels
First, measure the diameter of the original wheels (common sizes are 5cm, 6cm, and 7.5cm) and confirm the wheel type: snap-ring types are directly inserted into the chair leg holes, while threaded types require a wrench for fixation. For example, a 6.5cm diameter enlarged wheel can fit a 1.1cm snap-ring socket, but compatibility must be noted (e.g., a 1cm socket on IKEA chair legs is not suitable). Key Precautions:

  • The size of the new wheels should match the original ones. Wheels that are too small may cause the gas lift to be too close to the ground (leading to carpet blockage), while wheels that are too large may prevent the feet from resting naturally on the ground.
  • During installation, for snap-ring types, use pliers to grip the root and pull out the old wheel, then press the new wheel vertically until a 'click' sound confirms it is securely fastened; for threaded types, use a wrench to remove the old wheel counterclockwise and tighten the new wheel clockwise, then reinforce it.

2. Adding Heightening Pads
Choose heightening pads made of EVA, PVC, or ABS materials and place them under the chair legs. Prioritize models with anti-slip textures to prevent sliding. This method physically elevates the entire chair leg without altering the wheel structure, suitable for scenarios requiring significant height increase.

3. Using Caster Chair Foot Covers
Silicone/TPR soft-shell foot covers can be directly placed over the existing wheels without replacing them. Their advantages include:

  • Protecting the floor from scratches;
  • Reducing sliding noise;
  • Slightly increasing height (usually less than 1cm), suitable for users with minimal height requirements.

4. Using High-Caster Fixing Devices
For slight height increases (1-2cm), choose fixing devices with U-shaped slots. Their design fixes the existing wheels through the slots while increasing the bottom height, offering simple operation and low cost.

Selection Advice:

  • When pursuing significant height increase and compatibility allows, prioritize replacing the wheels;
  • When needing a quick height increase and not minding overall elevation, choose heightening pads;
  • When focusing on floor protection or noise reduction, use foot covers;
  • When only needing minor height adjustments, fixing devices are more suitable.
    Before operation, ensure size compatibility to avoid safety hazards caused by incompatibility.
