Office Chair Heightening

Admin October 09, 2026

There are multiple ways to heighten an office chair, and the appropriate method should be chosen based on the type of chair and specific needs. Here is a detailed operation guide:

I. Heightening methods for adjustable-height chairs

  1. Pneumatic office chairs: Locate the height adjustment handle beneath the seat. Move away from the chair or slightly lift your body off the seat surface. Pull the handle upwards while gently lifting the seat cushion with both hands. Utilize the elasticity of the pneumatic rod to raise the seat. Release the handle, and it will automatically lock the height. If you are relatively light in weight, you can stand and directly pull the seat cushion upwards with your hands while pulling the handle to assist in raising it.
  2. Screw-type office chairs: Find the knob at the bottom of the air rod or support rod. Rotate the knob counterclockwise, and the seat will gradually rise. After adjusting to the appropriate height, rotate the knob clockwise to tighten and secure it.

II. Heightening methods for non-adjustable-height chairs

  1. Adjust the scale on the chair legs: If there are scales at the bottom of the chair legs, rotate the four legs to the same scale to evenly heighten the chair. After adjustment, check whether the four legs are firmly on the ground and whether the seat cushion is level.
  2. DIY heightening of chair legs: Prepare scissors, glue (or double-sided tape), and fabric or old clothes. Cut the fabric into an appropriate size and shape and neatly stick it onto the chair legs. Choosing thicker fabric can enhance the heightening effect and make it more durable.
  3. Use objects for heightening: Cut off the top and bottom of an empty Mizone bottle and place it under the chair legs. You can adjust the height according to your needs, but it should not be too high.
  4. Add heightening legs: Purchase dedicated chair heightening legs made of metal or plastic and install them directly at the bottom of the chair. Ensure they are firmly and stably installed. After installation, sit on the chair a few times to check the stability.
  5. Heightening with auxiliary tools:
    • Install heightening foot pads: Choose metal or plastic foot pads with anti-slip designs and place them directly at the bottom of the chair legs. This can increase the height by 5 - 15 cm.
    • Replace with a longer air rod: If the original air rod is damaged or has insufficient travel, you can purchase a longer air rod of the same model. Confirm the diameter and length of the air rod, disassemble the base, and replace it. Tools are required, and pay attention to safety during the process.

III. Other modification plans

  1. Install lumbar supports and headrests: Measure the width of the chair back, choose lumbar supports and headrests of matching sizes, and fix them directly to the chair back using no-drill clips or straps.
  2. Use heightening pads or footstools: Purchase a sturdy footstool and place it under the chair, or place a heightening seat cushion on the chair surface. Choose heightening pads made of anti-slip materials.
  3. Replace with heightening chair legs: Measure the interface size of the original chair legs, purchase matching heightening chair leg accessories, use a wrench to unscrew the old chair legs, align the notches to install the new chair legs, and shake them after installation to test the stability.
  4. Replace with heightening backrest accessories: Suitable for situations where you want to keep the original chair frame.

IV. Troubleshooting and safety tips If the chair cannot be raised using the above methods, it may be due to air leakage in the air rod, a stuck handle, or a rusty knob. First, spray lubricant on the adjustment components and repeatedly pull the handle to try. If it still doesn't work, it is advisable to contact professional maintenance personnel to replace the parts. Avoid disassembling the pneumatic rod by yourself as there are safety risks. After adjustment, the best height is when your feet are flat on the ground, your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle, and your elbows are level with the tabletop to ensure comfort during long sitting sessions.
