The Height of Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

An excessively high office chair can pose health risks and should be adjusted to an appropriate height based on one's height.

According to national standards, the typical height range for office chairs is 40-50 centimeters, with 42 to 45 centimeters considered suitable for the general population. However, specific choices should be adjusted based on height: individuals under 160 centimeters tall are advised to choose chairs between 38 and 40 centimeters, while those over 175 centimeters can adjust to 45 to 48 centimeters or use a footrest to compensate for the height difference. This adjustment principle is based on ergonomic principles aimed at maintaining the natural alignment of body parts while seated.

If an office chair is too high and not adjusted promptly, it may lead to the following health issues: 1. Lower Limb Muscle and Ligament Injuries When feet are left hanging, the knees remain in a semi-flexed, suspended state for extended periods, causing the front thigh muscles to contract continuously without effective force generation. This abnormal load can lead to muscle atrophy, while the ligaments around the knees become lax due to prolonged stretching, reducing joint stability. For example, the patella (kneecap) is prone to deviating from its normal path in a semi-flexed state, increasing the risk of patellar chondromalacia.

2. Knee Joint Force Imbalance and Degenerative Changes In a normal seated position, the pressure on the knee joint is evenly distributed across the joint surface. However, when the chair is too high, the body's weight concentrates on the front of the knee joint, causing uneven cartilage wear. Over time, this can lead to osteoarthritis, characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and even limited mobility. Studies indicate that knee joint force imbalance is a significant contributing factor to degenerative changes in the knee joints of young and middle-aged adults.

3. Risk of Irreversible Functional Damage If adjustments are neglected for an extended period, the structures around the knee joint (such as the menisci and cruciate ligaments) may suffer irreversible damage due to chronic injury. For example, a torn meniscus is difficult to repair on its own and may require surgical intervention; lax ligaments can lead to habitual joint dislocations, severely affecting daily life.

Recommendation: When using an office chair, ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, your thighs are parallel to the ground, and your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. If the chair height is not adjustable, improve the situation by adding a cushion or using a footrest. Regularly check your sitting posture and avoid maintaining the same position for extended periods to reduce health risks.
