Office Chair Height Too High

Admin October 17, 2026

If the office chair height is too high, it can be resolved by adjusting the seat height, preparing a footrest, and paying attention to the height difference between the desk and chair.

Adjusting the Seat Height: This is the most direct and effective method. The adjustment methods for different models of office chairs may vary slightly, but usually, hand controls can be found. For some common models, the height can be adjusted by pulling up a lever or turning a knob; for pneumatic models, pumping the lever, i.e., repeatedly pushing it up and down, can achieve seat elevation. When adjusting, here's a tip: try starting from a standing position, positioning the front of the chair just below your knees, then sit down, ensuring your feet can rest flat on the ground. Additionally, more precise adjustments can be made based on height. For example, individuals who are 160 centimeters tall are advised to set the seat height to 42 to 43 centimeters; those who are 165 centimeters tall are suitable for 43 to 45 centimeters; and those who are 170 centimeters tall are best set to 45 to 47 centimeters. This ensures that when seated, your feet can rest flat on the ground, with your thighs and calves perpendicular, adhering to ergonomic principles and effectively reducing physical fatigue.

Preparing a Footrest: If the office chair is too high and cannot be adjusted to a suitable height for various reasons, preparing a footrest is a good option. Slide the footrest under the desk and place your feet on it, which can partially compensate for the inconvenience caused by the chair being too high, providing support for your feet and maintaining body balance and comfort.

Paying Attention to the Height difference between the Desk and Chair: In addition to adjusting the chair height, the height difference between the desk and chair should not be overlooked. Generally, it is best to keep the height difference between the desk and chair within the range of 280 - 320mm. If this height difference is not appropriate, even if the chair height is adjusted reasonably, it may still cause discomfort due to poor coordination with the desk, such as neck, shoulder, or back pain after prolonged use. Therefore, when adjusting the office chair height, also pay attention to whether the height difference between the desk and chair is within a reasonable range.
