Reducing the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

The height of an office chair can be reduced through the following methods, and the appropriate solution should be selected based on the type of chair and the height difference:

1. Utilize the chair's built-in adjustment function Most office chairs are equipped with a height adjustment mechanism, typically located beneath the seat or on the side. For lever-type designs (usually black or silver), press the adjustment lever downward to lower the seat height. High-end models may use a knob-type adjustment; turn the knob counterclockwise to gradually reduce the height. After adjustment, ensure the knob is locked to prevent the seat from rebounding. Precautions: If there is stuttering, abnormal noise, or irregular height adjustment during the process, it may indicate aging of the gas lift or failure of internal seals. Stop using immediately and contact after-sales service for replacement to avoid the risk of gas lift explosion.

2. Replace the gas lift (for fixed-height chairs) For fixed-height office chairs that cannot be adjusted with a lever, replacing the gas lift is a permanent solution. The steps are as follows:

  • Remove the old gas lift: Invert the chair, use a slender tool (such as a screwdriver) to press the spring clip inside the base, and simultaneously pull out the gas lift upward.
  • Install the new gas lift: Select a new one that matches the specifications of the original gas lift (usually marked with load-bearing and stroke parameters). Align the gas lift with the base hole and insert it vertically until a "click" sound indicates it is securely fixed. Advantages: Low cost (gas lifts typically cost between 50-200 yuan) and can permanently solve the height issue.

3. Add adjustable foot pads (for minor adjustments) If the chair is only slightly too high (a few millimeters to 1 cm), threaded adjustable foot pads can be used. These foot pads allow for height micro-adjustment (usually ranging from 0-3 cm) by rotating the bottom thread. Ensure the contact surface between the foot pad and the chair base is level during installation to avoid tilting. Applicable scenarios: Uneven floors or environments requiring temporary height adjustment.

4. Remove the original seat cushion (for chairs with removable cushions) Some office chairs have seat cushions fixed with clips or screws. If the chair is too high and the cushion is thick (such as a memory foam cushion), try removing the cushion to lower the height. Note: After removal, check if the chair frame is level to avoid discomfort from prolonged sitting due to the missing cushion.

5. Use a footrest for additional adjustment If the chair height exceeds the adjustable range, place a footrest beneath your feet (recommended height: 5-15 cm, made of non-slip rubber or wood). Simultaneously adjust the seat depth (slide the seat forward so that your knees are bent at a 90ยฐ angle) to reduce the sensation of leg suspension. Applicable users: Individuals of shorter stature or those who need to work at a desk for extended periods.
