Reducing the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

There are several methods to reduce the height of an office chair, and you can choose the appropriate one based on the type of chair and your actual needs:

I. Adjustment Methods for Adjustable-Height Chairs

  1. Operating the Hand Control Device

    • When seated, look for the control lever or knob beneath or on the side of the seat. For some models, you need to pull up the control lever to adjust the height, while for others, you need to turn the knob. If you are unsure about the specific operation, refer to the user manual or try each lever one by one.
    • Adjust slowly, moving a few centimeters at a time to avoid discomfort caused by rapid height changes. Once you reach a comfortable height, return the lever to its original position to lock it. For some pneumatic models, you need to repeatedly pump the lever (push it up and down) to adjust the height.
    • If it is more convenient to adjust while standing, remain standing, place the front of the chair under your knees, and sit down with your feet flat on the ground to ensure that the seat height matches the natural bend of your legs.
  2. Handling Special Situations

    • If the height adjustment function of the chair is stuck, check if the control lever is fully reset or if the internal air pressure in the gas cylinder is sufficient (long-term use may lead to insufficient air pressure).

II. Adjustment Methods for Fixed Office Chairs (Without Height Adjustment Function)

  1. Replacing the Gas Cylinder

    • Turn the chair upside down. Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver or a ballpoint pen refill) to press the C-shaped retaining clip on the inside of the base while pulling out the old gas cylinder upwards. If the retaining clip is too tight, apply some cooking oil to lubricate the connection. After waiting for 20 minutes to 2 hours, gently tap the connection with a hammer until a small gap appears, and then pull out the gas cylinder.
    • When installing the new gas cylinder, align it with the hole in the base and insert it vertically to avoid damage caused by tilting. Do not use hammering, prying, or heating methods to forcefully disassemble, as this may cause safety hazards.
  2. Adding Adjustable Foot Pads

    • If the chair is only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter too high, you can add adjustable foot pads to the bottom of the chair legs. Adjust the height by rotating the foot pads to achieve fine-tuning.

III. Other Auxiliary Adjustment Methods

  1. Using a Footrest

    • If the chair is too high and cannot be adjusted, prepare a footrest and place it under the desk. Put your feet on the footrest to keep your legs naturally bent and avoid fatigue caused by hanging your feet.
  2. Optimizing Work Posture

    • When adjusting the seat height, ensure that your eyes are level with the monitor. If the monitor height is fixed, adjust the seat to match your line of sight. At the same time, keep your elbows at the same height as the desktop to reduce shoulder and neck strain.
    • If the chair has armrests, adjust the armrest height to be level with the desktop. If you do not need arm support, remove the armrests or lower their height to avoid obstructing your knees from getting close to the desktop.

Precautions: Before making adjustments, confirm the structure of the chair to avoid damage caused by forced disassembly. If gas cylinder replacement is involved, it is recommended to contact a professional for operation to ensure safety.
