Office Chair Height & Size Standards Explained
Admin October 28, 2026
According to the national standard GB/T 3976-2014, the standard height range for adult office chairs is 40 to 50 centimeters, with the core principle being to ensure that the feet are flat on the ground, the thighs and calves are perpendicular, and the desk height is level with the elbows when seated.

Core Principles for Selecting Office Chair Height
- Basic Adaptability: The height of an office chair must meet the basic ergonomic requirements, ensuring that the feet are naturally flat on the ground and the thighs and calves form a 90-degree angle when seated. This posture distributes body weight evenly, reducing pressure on the legs and waist. If the chair is too high, the feet will hang in the air, obstructing blood circulation; if too low, it may compress the nerves behind the knees, causing discomfort.
- Coordination with Desk Height: Ideally, the desk height should be level with the user's elbows when seated. In this position, the arms hang naturally, and the elbows are bent at approximately 90 degrees, reducing the risk of shoulder and neck fatigue. For example, if the desk height is 72 centimeters, the chair height should be adjusted to 43 to 45 centimeters to keep the elbows level with the desk.
Recommended Heights for Different Heights
- Height 160 cm: It is recommended that the chair height be 42 to 43 centimeters. This range ensures that the feet are flat on the ground while avoiding thigh compression against the desk due to an excessively high chair.
- Height 165 cm: The recommended height is 43 to 45 centimeters. This range balances leg support and desk collaboration needs, suitable for most people of medium height.
- Height 170 cm: The optimal height is 45 to 47 centimeters. Taller individuals require a higher chair to maintain perpendicular thighs and calves while avoiding hunching over due to an excessively low chair.
Other Key Dimensions to Consider
In addition to height, the seat width, seat depth, and back height of an office chair also affect comfort:
- Seat Width: It should be wider than the hips, typically not less than 40 centimeters, to avoid lateral compression.
- Seat Depth: It should allow for a 2- to 3-finger gap between the back and the chair back when seated, with the back of the knees approximately 5 centimeters from the front edge of the seat to prevent blood vessel compression.
- Back Height: It should support up to below the shoulder blades, promoting the natural curve of the spine and reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.
Summary: The height of an office chair should be based on the principle of feet flat on the ground and thighs and calves perpendicular, adjusted to the recommended range according to height, and considering seat width, seat depth, and back height to achieve comprehensive ergonomic adaptation.
