Office Chair Height for Tall People

Admin October 08, 2026

The height of an office chair should be adjusted according to the user's height. For tall individuals, it is recommended to set the seat height between 45 and 47 centimeters, paired with a 75-centimeter desk, ensuring compliance with ergonomic parameters.

According to the standards GB/T 3976-2014 and GB3326-1997, the typical seat height range for office chairs is 400 to 440 millimeters (40-44 centimeters), with mainstream products adjustable from 360 to 480 millimeters (36-48 centimeters). For users taller than 180 centimeters, it is advisable to adjust the seat height to 45 to 47 centimeters and pair it with a 75-centimeter-high standard desk. This combination meets ergonomic requirements: when seated, the thighs should be parallel to the ground, the elbows should naturally bend at a 90-degree angle, and the height difference between the desk and chair should be controlled between 28 and 32 centimeters to avoid physical fatigue or injury caused by mismatched heights.

Adjustment Basis and Precautions:

  1. Seat Height and Leg Health: If the chair is too high, causing the feet to hang in the air, the knee joints may remain in an unnatural extended state for an extended period, potentially leading to decreased stability, muscle atrophy, and ligament laxity. Therefore, seat height adjustment should ensure that the feet are flat on the ground or supported by a footrest.
  2. Desk-Chair Height Difference: A desk-chair height difference that is too small (e.g., less than 28 centimeters) can cause the body to lean forward, increasing pressure on the cervical and lumbar spine; a difference that is too large (e.g., more than 32 centimeters) may force the arms to be raised, causing shoulder and neck pain. It is recommended to adjust the chair back or desk height to maintain the difference within a reasonable range.
  3. Adjustability Priority: Choosing an office chair that supports multi-dimensional adjustments (such as seat depth, armrest height, and backrest angle) can further accommodate different body types and usage scenarios. For example, seat depth adjustment can prevent concentrated pressure on the buttocks, and armrest height matching the desk surface can reduce the time the arms are left hanging.

Special Case Handling: If the existing chair cannot be adjusted to 45-47 centimeters, the seat height can be temporarily increased by adding a cushion thickness. However, it is important to note that the cushion material should have sufficient support to prevent height loss due to collapse. For long-term use, it is recommended to replace the office chair with one that meets the standards to ensure health and work efficiency.
