Considerations for Office Chair Height

Admin October 14, 2026

The height of an office chair should be adjusted comprehensively according to height, usage scenarios, and ergonomic principles, with the core goal of keeping all parts of the body naturally relaxed and avoiding long-term improper posture that can lead to strain.

I. Basic Height Standards and Height Adaptation
The height of adult office chairs typically falls within the range of 400-500mm (40-50 centimeters), in line with national standards. Specific adaptation recommendations are as follows:

  • For those under 160cm in height: It is recommended to set the chair height between 40-48cm to avoid having feet dangling or knees bending excessively due to excessive height.
  • For those between 160-180cm in height: A height range of 45-52cm is recommended, which can meet the natural sitting posture needs of most people.
  • For those over 180cm in height: A height range of 48-55cm is recommended to prevent thigh compression or lumbar forward lean due to insufficient chair height.
Gender Differences: Men often use 43cm as a baseline, while women use 41cm. Adjustments should be made based on heel thickness (e.g., an increase of 2-3cm for high heels) or activity allowance (e.g., frequent standing up).

II. General Adjustment Principles

  1. Foot Posture: When sitting, feet should be flat on the ground, with knees bent at 90 degrees, thighs parallel to the ground, and a fist-sized space (about 5cm) behind the knees to avoid blood vessel compression. If feet cannot touch the ground, a footrest is needed; if the palm cannot be easily inserted under the thighs, the seat height should be raised.
  2. Relationship Between the Desktop and Elbows: When hands are naturally placed on the keyboard, the elbow bending angle should be between 90ยฐ and 110ยฐ. If the desktop is too high, raise the seat or elevate the feet; if the desktop is too low, lower the seat or use an adjustable keyboard tray.
  3. Lumbar Support: The seat height should ensure that the back is pressed against the backrest, with natural support for the waist (the lumbar support should be aligned with the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae and the sacrum). Avoid bending forward or leaning back excessively, as this can lead to concentrated pressure on the waist.
  4. Head and Screen Distance: The top of the screen should be level with or slightly lower (10ยฐ-15ยฐ) than the line of sight, and the seat height should be adjusted to match the screen position. If you need to tilt your head up or down, adjust the seat or screen height to reduce cervical spine strain.

III. Fine-Tuning for Different Scenarios

  • Using a Laptop: If the laptop is placed directly on the desktop, the screen may be too low, causing arm suspension. In this case, appropriately lower the seat height or elevate the laptop (e.g., using a stand).
  • Long-term Office Work: Adjust the seat height or stand up and move around every 1-2 hours to avoid continuous tension in local muscles.
  • Special Needs: For those who sit for long periods, it is recommended to choose an adjustable seat with a gas lift for quick adaptation to different postures (e.g., writing, meetings, resting).
