Office Chair Height and Recline Adjustment
The height and recline functions of office chairs are adjusted through different mechanisms, with specific operating methods as follows:

Height Adjustment The height adjustment of an office chair is usually achieved using a gas lift (pneumatic height adjustment column) beneath the seat. The gas lift is filled with high-pressure gas, and the seat height can be controlled by pressing the lever at the top of the gas lift (usually located on the right or front side of the seat): pressing the lever downward releases gas from the gas lift, lowering the seat; releasing the lever locks the current height automatically due to the internal gas pressure in the gas lift. Some gas lifts are equipped with multi-level locking functions, allowing for step-by-step height adjustments to accommodate users of different heights or varying desk heights.
Recline Adjustment The recline function can be adjusted in different ways depending on the chair design. Common types include:
- Lever Adjustment System Commonly found in mid-range and high-end office chairs, this system is operated using an independent lever located on the right or left side beneath the seat. The adjustment steps are as follows:
- Locate the lever and confirm its function (some levers need to be lifted upward first to release the recline lock);
- Lean your body backward while adjusting the lever angle to a comfortable position;
- If the lever has a locking function, operate the lever again (e.g., press it downward) to fix the recline angle. This type of system usually supports multi-level angle adjustments (e.g., 3-5 levels), allowing users to choose according to their body weight and sitting habits.
- Knob Adjustment System Commonly seen in ergonomic chairs, this system uses a knob beneath the seat to control the recline tension and angle:
- Tension Adjustment: Turn the knob clockwise to increase the recline resistance (suitable for heavier users) and counterclockwise to decrease it (suitable for lighter users);
- Angle Adjustment: Some chairs are equipped with an independent knob to set the maximum recline angle (e.g., 90ยฐ-135ยฐ) to prevent excessive recline and loss of balance.
- Pneumatic Adjustment System Some modern office chairs integrate recline adjustment with height adjustment, using the same lever but with different operating directions:
- Push the lever forward to lower the seat and pull it backward to recline;
- Combined with the smooth characteristics of the gas lift, this allows for simultaneous adjustment of height and recline angle.
High-End Function Extensions Some high-end ergonomic chairs further optimize the recline experience:
- Four-Level Memory Mode: Four common sitting postures (e.g., upright for work, slight recline, deep rest, etc.) can be preset and switched with a single button press;
- Three-Axis Five-Motor Linkage: The backrest, seat cushion, headrest, armrests, and footrest adjust simultaneously to ensure uniform support for all body parts during recline;
- Synchronized Tilt Technology: When reclining, the front part of the seat cushion automatically tilts upward to maintain a stable angle between the thighs and torso, reducing leg pressure.
Precautions Before adjusting, confirm the chair's weight capacity to avoid gas lift failure or damage due to overloading. If the recline function malfunctions, check if the lever/knob is stuck or if the gas lift is leaking gas, and contact after-sales service for repairs if necessary.
