Office Chair Height and Backrest Adjustment Issues
Admin October 13, 2026
When an office chair fails to adjust, it is necessary to troubleshoot both height and backrest adjustment issues separately. Below are common causes and solutions:

Height Adjustment Problems
Common Causes:
- Gas Cylinder Failure: The gas cylinder is the core component controlling height adjustment. If it leaks air, has a failed seal, or suffers internal structural damage, the chair may fail to rise or lower smoothly or may get stuck.
- Locking Mechanism Jamming: Some chairs are equipped with locking mechanisms (such as mechanical latches or knobs). If these mechanisms are aged, clogged with dirt, or not unlocked due to misoperation, they can hinder the height adjustment function.
- Mechanical Component Blockage: Over time, dust and debris may accumulate around the gas cylinder or in the height adjustment track, increasing friction or causing components to jam.
- Design Flaws: A few chairs may have structural design flaws (such as insufficient clearance between the gas cylinder and the base), which can limit the height adjustment range.
Solutions:
- Inspect the Gas Cylinder: Check the surface of the gas cylinder for oil stains (indicating air leakage) or obvious deformation. If damaged, contact after-sales service for replacement.
- Unlock or Repair the Locking Mechanism: Try rotating, pressing, or gently tapping the locking part. If this does not work, disassemble and clean it or replace the parts.
- Clean Mechanical Components: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the gaps in the base or a soft cloth dampened with a small amount of alcohol to wipe the surface of the gas cylinder, avoiding water infiltration.
- Apply Moderate Force for Adjustment: Keep your body weight centered when adjusting. If the chair gets stuck, gently tap the base or alternate between sitting and standing to apply pressure.
- Contact Professional Repair: If the above methods are ineffective, there may be internal damage to the gas cylinder or structural issues with the base, requiring professional repair.
Backrest Adjustment Problems
Common Causes:
- Wire Control Switch Failure: If the wire control circuit is broken, disconnected, or the internal spring is loose, the backrest may fail to lock or adjust.
- Gas Rod Connection Issues: If the backrest adjustment gas rod leaks air or is not installed properly, it will lose its supporting force.
- Control Rod Jamming: When leaning back, if the control rod is pushed too deeply into the fixing hole or the internal spring fails, the backrest may not return to its original position.
Solutions:
- Inspect and Repair the Wire Control System: Check if the wire control terminal is disconnected and reattach it if necessary. If the circuit is broken, replace the wire control component; if it is loose, adjust the nut for tightening.
- Replace the Gas Rod: Squeeze the thin end of the gas rod with your hand. If it can easily retract, it indicates air leakage, and you need to purchase a gas rod of the same model for replacement.
- Adjust the Control Rod: If the backrest is locked, pull the control rod outward to the neutral position, then slowly push it back into the fixing hole to test its flexibility.
Tip: If the chair is still under warranty, prioritize contacting the manufacturer's after-sales service. Self-disassembly may void the warranty, so proceed with caution.
