Office Chair Height Adjustment Repair

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair height adjustment issues can be repaired based on the specific cause. Here are common fault types and their handling methods:

1. Base Fault

If the chair leans to one side or experiences stuttering during height adjustment, it may be due to loose or damaged base connectors. Repair Method: Invert the chair and gently tap specific areas of the base with a rubber mallet (or a regular hammer wrapped in a towel) to separate the base from the seat. Check if the base connection screws are loose or if the steel plate is deformed. Replace any aged or damaged components (such as bearings or springs). Note: Avoid tapping too hard to prevent paint damage.

2. Gas Cylinder Fault

Common issues with gas cylinders include aging and pressure loss or worn seals, resulting in the chair's inability to lock at a desired height or gradual lowering. Repair Method:

  • Tap Reset: Invert the chair and tap the bottom of the gas cylinder flatly with the side of a hammer (avoiding the center button) to attempt to restore sealing.
  • Replace Gas Cylinder: If tapping is ineffective, it indicates that the internal sealing structure of the gas cylinder is damaged (such as aged seals or dust ingress causing minor leaks). Since gas cylinders are high-pressure sealed components, self-disassembly is not recommended. Purchase a new gas cylinder of the same specification for replacement.
  • Daily Maintenance: Avoid frequent height adjustments or overloading. Regularly clean dust from the surface of the gas cylinder to prevent impurities from entering.

3. Adjustment Lever Fault

If the chair continues to lower without operating the handle, it may be due to misaligned metal levers, loose screws, or worn plastic parts. Repair Method:

  • Check if the pin at the connection between the lever and the gas cylinder is continuously pressed (causing the valve to remain partially open).
  • Adjust the lever position, tighten screws, and replace worn plastic parts (such as handle connectors).
  • Test the height adjustment function to ensure the valve fully closes after handle operation.

4. Base Mechanism Deformation

Long-term overloading or impact to the chair may cause deformation of the base steel plate, leading to stuttering or failure of height adjustment. Repair Method:

  • Observe if the base steel plate is bent and use a straightedge to detect the degree of deformation.
  • Minor deformations can be reset by tapping (with professional tool assistance), while severe deformations require replacement of the entire base mechanism.
  • Preventive Measures: Avoid overloading the chair beyond its rated weight (usually 100-120kg) and handle it gently during movement.

Summary: Office chair height adjustment issues are often related to the gas cylinder, base, or adjustment lever. When repairing, first identify the fault type and then handle it accordingly. For high-pressure components (such as gas cylinders) or structural deformations, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel or replace parts to ensure safety and functionality.
