Office Chair Height Adjustment Illustration
Admin October 11, 2026
There are mainly three types of height adjustment methods for office chairs: pneumatic, screw-type, and cable-controlled. Here are the specific operations:

Pneumatic Height-Adjustable Chairs
- Locate the control lever: Look for it on the right or left side directly beneath the seat. It is usually a single lever or button. Some multifunctional chairs may have two levers, controlling height and backrest angle respectively.
- Assume the correct posture: Sit on the chair, ensuring your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs and lower legs form a 90-degree angle as much as possible. This is the reference posture for adjustment.
- Identify and operate the control lever: For lever-type, pull the lever outward or downward and hold it; for button-type, simply press the button. If the chair is heavy or adjustment is not smooth, slightly lift your buttocks during operation to reduce some of your body weight, making the height adjustment smoother.
- Adjust the height using body weight:
- Raising: When no one is sitting on the chair, pull up the operating lever, and the rebound force of the high-pressure nitrogen inside will directly push the seat upward.
- Lowering: While remaining seated, pull up the operating lever. Your own body weight will overcome part of the nitrogen pressure, allowing the seat to descend smoothly.
- Inflation-type: Locate the knob on the gas rod. Turning it clockwise will lower the chair.
Screw-Type Adjustment
Find the knob beneath the seat and adjust the height by rotating it. Generally, the rule is "clockwise rotation lowers the height, counterclockwise rotation raises the height". This adjustment method is relatively slow in speed, but it has a simple mechanical structure, good stability, and no potential safety concerns associated with gas rods.
Cable-Controlled Adjustment
- Principle: Similar to the principle of a bicycle brake cable, the outer layer of the cable is a coiled metal layer that can bend but not stretch, and the core wire is a steel wire rope. The adjustment principle is to fix the outer layer at both ends, and the tightening and loosening of the steel wire rope will pull the designated device to achieve the purpose of adjusting the seat cushion height.
- Control position: The position of the adjustment buttons can be placed anywhere on the seat. For example, some have the height adjustment and reclining control devices made into two buttons placed beneath the right side of the seat cushion; some have the height adjustment and reclining control devices made into paddles placed beneath the armrests on both sides.
